I post on several message boards and recently a poster stated "I hate most of the medical community" .
I wasn't going to respond at all until another poster agreed with her and then I gently reminded them that nurses were part of that community and I hope they didn't include us in that "hate".
Well they absolutely did! Apparently some personal experiences with doctors and family death, personal illness and such left them both with horrible views of nurses. I took it a tad offensively and it kind of sparked a mini battle on one board.
I must say that most of the other posters were pretty supportive saying they have had good experiences with nursing or saying no one should generalize and say they hate ALL of one profession.
I'm just really peeved at this. Like we don't get enough crap everyday as it is. No one gets it that we are humans too and deserve to be treated with respect. I've had bad medical experiences, I've had bad stuff happen with plenty of things in life, it doesn't mean ALL things are bad. I guess I just never really heard of someone HATING nurses like that, it took me by surprise.
What do you guys think?
I would perceive the statement, "I hate most of the medical community" to indicate some discomfort with the more general notion of health care/illness/death.
Some people seem to perceive human beings as almost disconnected from their physical selves and are almost insulted when some health issue (for them or for someone close to them) forces them to re-examine that perception.
My brother hates everyone in the medical profession, mostly because of the salaries they make. He thinks they are all just in it for the money. I think he really hates the idea that I will be making far more money than him when I graduate with my Masters. I like to remind him that doctors and nurses go to school for a lot of years, work terrible hours, have a ton of responsibility, work in less than desirable conditions a lot of the time, etc., and deserve to be compensated well for it.
I try not to get dragged in to these discussions with him anymore. I understand the original poster taking offense though, it's hard to just let people's unjust comments roll off your back sometimes.

Seriously!! Because working night shift, cleaning up puke, poop and blood is great way to get rich quick! How about the factory workers that work monday-friday getting paid more than nurses with a high school diploma or eqivalent. Lets not forget if they work weekends or holidays its double and triple time. Oh yes and do they need to purchase extra insurance so they wont get sued? Thats a really great way to think going through life, hating the entire profession because of what they make an hour. Should we talk about lawyers??
Some of these people also aren't very rational. An example: I was doing research for a school paper on eating disorders..there are websites that actually encourage these behaviors(ie tips on how to purge, how to hide your problem from parents and doctors etc) and most of the people posting on these websites HATE nurses and doctors because they see us as trying to take their disease away from them. They don't want this believe it or not....the medical community is seen as the enemy.
