So I love my floor job as a per diem nurse, but I also really hate it. I always get the first admission! Always get the heaviest run, always float, always me getting the end if the stick. I am thankful I get paid more and pick my days but why do these nurses have to be so cruel everytime I work. I am getting tired of being abided. Sorry needed to vent! Bad couple days on the floor, I am glad I have another easier job!

There are definitely pros and cons. The worst part for me is being the first to be put on call, or cancelled for low census. When I was full time staff, there was always someone who volunteered to stay home. As a per diem, there is no option or discussion. When they don't need me, I stay home.
Some facilities are worse than others when it comes to giving the per diems the crappy assignments. It all depends on the culture, and what passes as acceptable behavior. What gets to me is that there are certain patients who NEED continuity of care, and it's not fair to the patient and their families to hand them off to float nurses because they are difficult to get along with.
Been there,done that, ASN, RN

Amen! You left out on of my major gripes .. pulled to another unit after the first 4 hours!
Any chance of getting to know your patients , or heaven forbid, a break... is out the window.
