Has this happened to anyone before?

first i'll start off giving you a little history about myself. i have been a nurse for six years. currently i have worked part time in one hospital for the last 10 months & registry at another hospital for 1 1/2 years. there were changes made to the registry program at the one hospital & was offered a staff position & i accepted. i gave my two weeks notice at my part time position & had scheduled vacation time for 1 1/2 weeks coming up this week & told my manager that i would forego my vacation time to leave in good standing. management does not handle the scheduling at this facility. there is a person that works on the unit & does the staffing & time cards only. when i gave my notice the manager informed me to call this person & to inform them that i was giving my notice & i needed to work the 2 weeks since i am leaving. i called this person last friday am & left a message & did not receive a call back. i received a call at 0715 this am from the supervisor telling me i am on the schedule to work today. i received another call from the person that does the scheduling today at 0800 & she informed me she received a message from the manager on friday to put me back on the schedule, but she did not return my call back to let me know what was going on! i was not sure if the days that were scheduled with vacation time were already staffed & if i would have to work another day, etc! this is not the first time i have had a scheduling problem. this has never happened to me before & i am very frustrated!!!!! has this happened to anyone else?

Oh yes, I will never forget that day. It was 3 weeks ago on tuesday. acording to my hand out schdule I was off. I recieved a phone call from my boss, DON, staff with all kind of words on my voice mail why I didn't show up? When I called them they told me " It was acomputer error" They never said sorry or any thing.

I think we've either all been there or we'll all be there at some time. when I was an aide....I worked 3rd shift for a while and one valentines day night...i was off and got a phone call at 3 am from a nurse telling me that I didnt come in and that I could be terminated for it by the DON...soooo......I get up and go in for those 4 hours and when I got there they had me locked out in the cold!...I looked at their schedule and someone had wrote me in to work on my day off....I took MY copy of the schedule just to prove my point to that nurse. I never did find out who wrote me in but I was heated about it either way. The same thing happened to me as a nurse...I was off...the DON put me in to work one day and never asked me..never told me..nothing ...so here I was at the bank and get a call from a co nurse of mine and she whispered on the phone "where are you? did you know you were down to work today??"....ummm no...I didnt but...I turned around and went on in to work....an hour late. I would talk to whoever is doing your scheduling? DO you have to do written requests for days off? I would make copies of everything you request from this point on. Thats what I do. It helps when they say " you never gave me that request"..

Always have a paper trail. Just like in nursing, if it's not written or documented, it's not valid or never happened. CYA for patients and you. ;)

Yes and it amazes me how people are so quick to blame you though it's someone elses goof and how nobody ever apologizes. Of course the whole staff thinks you just did not show up and you have to explain to your peers how it was not your fault.

Here's one for you, I left my facility, mind you I had worked there for almost 9 years, I had given notice in April to move to Fl. from Pa. While in Fl. I found out i was 6 weeks pregnant and wanted to move back to Pa so my facility gave me my job back and all was well until about the end of August when i ended up going on Maternity leave and came down to Fl to visit and ended up on hosp. bed rest, I ended up having my baby in Fl and had to wait 6 weeks to come back, mind you i had notified my facility, When i was ready to come back to Pa. i called my DON and she told me my job was waiting, Well I had been offered a great job here in Florida but with a new baby decided that Security of home out weighed starting over,,, anyway i get to Pa and guess what! NO JOB!!! My DON said that due to our human resources person leaving and them not replacing her they never had me fill out any paperwork for FMLA and my job had been filled and nothing was available... so here i am stuck with no job... anyway I reapplied and was given some crap about quitting without notice when i went on leave and they would not hire me back at that time... so I feel for you all... OH and I now have a awesome job here in Fl and am glad things worked out ...

Have you ever been called in by your facility to work extra and they needed more help and you were already there? This has happened a couple times and the first time had my dh going crazy thinking I was in an accident on the way to work or god knows what else... You think they would look at your scheduled first before they call..

This has happened to me numerous times at my past job working in a nursing home. In fact, the scheduling was so bad and they did not communicate to us, that I finally quit and am now working at our hospital.

This has happened to me only once. I was assigned to NICU, but I often took shifts in the PICU to get some experience. I had been to the scheduler about 4 weeks before Christmas to look over the calendar and find some shifts. We talked about a shift on Dec. 23. I initially said yes, but a few minutes later I realized that I would have company that night so I changed my mind right then and there.

So, Dec. 23 came around. My company has all gone to bed and I'm getting into my flannel jammies. I'm 5 months pregnant and I'm exhausted from the day. About 11:30pm I get a call from the PICU charge nurse:"Where are you??" Um, I'm at home, in my jammies...Apparently I was still on the schedule. :banghead: She gave me a hard time when I told her that I had been taken off the schedule. She said "So what are we supposed to do?" I dunno. I'm going to bed. This baby has been kicking my bladder all day, I have 7 extra people in my house, and oh yes--Im NOT coming in. She threatened my job, but I didn't budge. I knew I was right and I was not going to be bullied into staying up all night working. Management stood by me and the PICU never messed up my schedule again.:D

Yes, this sort of thing happens all the time. If support staff, including "leadership" were held to at least half the accountability as are staff nurses....
