Has anyone been out of RN school more than 5 or 10 years?

Published

Need advice on the best approach to prepare for the RN boards after graduating over 10 years ago. I am having difficulty recalling a lot of the information I learned in school.

I have a BSN and successfully passed the LPN boards in June 2008 on the first try but have not had the same success with the RN boards. They are much more difficult and intense.

Any advice or tip will be highly regarded, thank you in advance for your support. :nurse:

I'd check out the NCLEX section here. Suzanne's plan has really helped a lot of people from what I read. Good luck.

I used the review book by Kaplan - it focuses on how to answer questions, spotting key words, etc...there were many questions (meds, diagnosis...) during the NCLEX that I had never heard of, but by applying the techniques/processes in the book..I could come up with a seemingly sound answer. For content, I used Saunders. Seemed to work for me. Good luck to you!

i'd see if i could audit the nursing classes at the local community college. all you'd be doing is sitting in on the lectures and not taking the tests because you are not taking the class for a grade (but still paying the tuition). or, you could look for and take an rn refresher course. the one around here runs about $600 for 6 or 8 weeks. some of the continuing education companies offer refresher courses you can purchase to do at home.

i have a copy of saunders comprehensive review for the nclex-rn examination, 3rd edition, by linda anne silvestri. it runs about $40+ and includes a cd with over 4,000 questions + answers. the book has stuff nicely organized in outlines and lists. the questions on the cd, however, does have some errors as people have noticed if you read the posts on the nclex forum. hopefully they will have been corrected with the latest edition.
