Has anyone had experience in starting a podcast?

Specializes in Hospice and Palliative Nurse.

Hi... I am certified in Hospice and Palliative care, with 15 years in as a hospice nurse. I would love to do a weekly podcast with the ability eventually to have call in questions. Subject matter related to terminal illness, family issues, death / dying etc....it seems to be a taboo subject, but let's face it...no one gets out of here alive, right?

Anyway, I think there is a need. What do you think? Just need some advice.

Thanks!

I don't have any experience myself, but I would suggest doing a Google search to help you get started with the how-tos of starting a podcast in general.

Also given your desired subject matter, you may also want to consider getting advice from an attorney versed in nursing issues (you can find some here: TAANA Executive Office - Home), your state BON and/or your carrier. You want to make sure that your podcast activities don't result in you going outside of your scope of practice and/or making you ripe for lawsuits.

Good luck!

NashvilleJeanne,

That sounds great, I don't have my podcast YET!

but I am working on one.

1.) Get a Topic your passionate about, sounds like you have one, You already have lots of insight and experience.

2.) Get your domain name, Go to Go Daddy or Namecheap.

3.) Equipment, its pretty cheap to get started, if you have a PC use Audacity to record your podcast.

if you have a Mac, it already comes with Garage Band. Get a usb mic/headset. You can get a good one for about 20-25$ on Amazon

4.) Get yourself a FB fan page for your podcast

5.)Eventually you will need and email responder service, MailChimp is free for the first 2,000 subscriber.

might sound like a lot, but just get started, Your message and passion are the most import things.

Hope this helps.

Cesar.

A friend of mine had one that was quite successful but he could never figure out how to make any money off of it, good luck.

Hi Nashvillejeanne. I love listening to podcasts and I highly recommend heading over to The Leading Nurse Radio Network | RN FM RADIO Kevin Ross and Keith Carlson have a great podcast, both RN's and they have recently each done a spin off of their own shows. They are uber friendly and are always open to helping out nurses and answering questions. Wishing you luck on your endeavors. I believe we need more podcasts for nurses.

That's great you want to start a podcast!

The call in component is nice, and we started with that on Blog Talk Radio, but we ended up leaving there to start our own platform. The sound quality was poor on BTR, it wasn't very customizable, we were "locked down," and the live listens and engagement paled in comparison to our archived listens.

The thing with podcasts is that consumers want to be able to listen to them on their own time (at anytime). You might be better off creating a platform or some way that you can have questions emailed to you or PM'd, and then answer them on the air...with the obvious disclaimer that this is "your opinion" and making sure that your stating to have them consult their healthcare provider, but essentially you could be helping them make a better informed decision.

As gulfgirl72 stated, Keith and I are always happy to help. We're launching a brand new network of podcasts that are all nurse produced, so we know a thing or two about how to get started.

Happy to help.

Kevin

I would try it as a hobby on a free site and see if you like doing it and get any traction. If it takes off and you enjoy it, you may have a full time business! Or leverage it to doing the same thing on salary for some related organization.

A fellow nurse/nutritionist and I started the "Paleocare Podcast" about a year ago. It's been a learning experience for sure! We had no idea what we were doing when we first started and we have figured it out along the way. We host it on Libsyn (for a small monthly fee) and it is available on iTunes as well. We don't make any money off of it, but we use it as a way to advertise for an online nutrition course. But mostly, it is an outlet for us to vent about the conventional health care system and a way that we stay connected with the health and wellness community that we are a part of.

As far as actually recording, do not invest in a lot of expensive equipment. At first, we recorded using Skype and Skype Recorder (Mac) or Pamela (PC) and a cheap Logitech headset. We eventually switched to recording using our iPhone and an app called "Tape A Call". The sound quality is much better and the connection is more reliable than Skype. We edit using Garage Band.

As a hospice nurse, I absolutely love your proposed podcast focus and I think that it would fill a void that exists when it comes to death and dying. Good luck!

Thanks for posting. I love learning about different social media on the side and have been looking into different ventures to incorporated with nursing. Then I found jon haws podcast
