Has anyone ever appealed a decision letter from nursing school?

Published

hey guys, i just recently discovered that i was not admitted for Hamptons BSN nursing program..I had 3.5 gpa my transcript shows good consistent perf. but i got one bad grade (GPA 3.1 now) in one of the chemistry classes( gen chem I)...so retook it got an A...ive always attended fulltime volunteered as a CNA and everything..perfect refer. lettrs etc...the decision lettr said in the light of my best efforts...u cant get a bad grade in any sci. class period regardless of gpa!...and that i cant EVEN REAPPLY!!..wow..i really want to go here so i pushed the envelope:uhoh3:...the director said write a letter of appeal to her directly by late sep ..(she makes the ultimate decision, but also considers recomend. from nurse commitee) the prgrm seats 30..she asked would i be willing to take additional courses..i said yes...she said i can appeal for the spr. 08 semest!!...so what im thinking is taking an extra math course, gen chemII and a humantiy course (the humanity is the last pre-req, they dont req. the chem II and math) this fall..finish them with A's..i have since wrote a bomb appeal letter...I want to show her I can handle thier nurs. prog..she told me that that one grade in gen. chem was y i didnt get in..i felt lik melting when she said that...what would you guys recommend..help please!!!!!!!!!!!!:uhoh21:

Why are you appealing the decision? Was it a lottery, point based, for other reasons etc...? I guess it depends on why you're doing it to give a fair opinion.

Yeah, need more info.

Were your grades sub par? Were there just too many candidates?

Do you think it was because you are black/poor/young/male/immigrant/etc?

Never tried it myself. As long as your case is with merit, good luck.

Just wanted to wish you the best of luck! :D I agree that while you're working on your appeal and applying again it would be best to create a back up plan. I hope it all works out for you! :)

At our school we look at things like that because so many people apply for so few spots in class - 356 applications for 20 spots. (Our main campus had 600+ applications for 50 spots).

The lowest GPA that we took for this Fall was 3.88 - that is how competitive the applicants were.

We usually look at all the applicants with 3.5 and higher. Then we put them in order of "points" (we have a selective admission points system) and take the top 20 people. If there is a tie, then we look at if you had ever failed A&P or Chemistry. And there are a couple other things we can look at if we have a tie in that instance.

We never tell anyone that they cannot reapply, but we do tell them with a GPA of less than 3.5 is it highly unlikely that they will ever get into our program. :o

Yes and I got in the following year.[/quote']

Now that Iris has converged the threads and I get a full picture of your situation, I wanted to make a comment. I would still give it a try; however, most programs are very competitive. When I appealed, I had not failed any classes or retaken classes (the school I go to does not allow for retakes anyway). The school I attend gets 1700 applicants and has 120 spots, so there has to be some sort of weed out process. Not that it always seems fair - because it doesn't.

I could not understand why I did not get in the first time because I had not failed any courses, had a good GPA, worked as a CNA for years, did volunteer work, etc. So, I call the admissions office and asked, "What could I do to improve my chances for admission next year? She told me that she really wasn't sure; however, they could reinstate my application for next year. I had it reinstated and was accepted this year.

Take care and I wish you the best of luck with your educational endeavors.
