Hartnell College in California

Nursing Students LPN-RN

Hi Everybody,

I'm curious if anybody can give me information about Hartnell Colleges LVN-RN program. I've applied there and I've never attended the college before but it's within 45 minutes from my house. Any information regarding their program would be greatly appreciated.

At one time this program enjoyed a statewide reputation for being one of the best, if not the best, RN programs in the state. Very competitive. More than 50% of each class eliminated prior to graduation. A few years back, though, happened to look on the website for NCLEX pass rates and saw that apparently the program seems to have gone downhill. Could not speak to the quality of the program today.

Thank you for that information. I've heard of the school but didn't hear enough about the school.

hi! thanks for asking about the hartnell college nursing program! contrary to previous rumors, we are strong and getting stronger! our national pass rate for the past 3 years has been 90-100% for both the lvn and rn programs. we currently admit 50 rn students and 20 lvn students each year. our clinical sites are in acute care hospitals, clinics and long term care facilities. we have a new nursing building with a high fidelity simulation learning lab! please check our web site for more information.

While I can see the need to provide positive input, what I stated was not a rumor. I posted what I saw, not a rumor. Unless, Hartnell's good reputation was only rumor. At the time I looked at the NCLEX pass rates, I was astounded that Hartnell was so low. And as I said in my post, it was in the past, longer than three years ago, to be exact. Glad to see that things have improved.

I'm more interested in what's current than what's in the past. What ever is in the past is in the past. It's good that the school has excellent pass rates because I want to attend a school where the pass rates are great and the reputation is the same. I don't want to attend a school where if I were to interview for a position as a new grad RN that they will look at me with doubt. Rules and regulations are in place for a reason. Thank you both for your input.

Did I say that I was aware how it is today? That is to mean it changed? Talk to some of the persons who were part of the more than 50% that were kicked out to get a better picture than what any one else can portray. There is a very good reason I didn't attend that school when I was accepted. And there is nothing to say that the same situation is not there. Few people answer requests for info on this forum to mislead the requestor. If you don't like the input, go on until you find input that you like. I answered in good faith and didn't appreciate my valid information being called a "rumor". And by the way, yesterday is the past too.

Are you referring to me? May I ask what I said that bothered you? I don't think I insulted your post in any way so if you took insult to it that wasn't my intention. The reason why I stated that I was more interested in what's going on today rather than the past because things change over time. Even though it might haven't been so great in the past maybe it has changed for the positiveas of now. I appreciate your input hence the reason why I thanked you in the first place.

This is what I pulled up from the CA BRN website.

Doesn't seem all that bad 88.86% on average. I would say that's a pretty good program. Thanks everyone for your input.

Hi. I'll try to answer your question in regard to my experience with Hartnell College. I've been going to Hartnell College for 3 years now working on my prerequisites. Almost every one of my prerequisites to get into the RN program was done at Hartnell College. I've been very happy with my science and non-science classes at Hartnell. I've noticed in my science class prerequisites that a lot of the teachers have PH.D.'s, which I find unusual in a community college. From my understanding most community college teachers need or only have a Masters degree. The quality of the classes has been excellent in my opinion. I really got a lot out of those classes. I have a 4.0 GPA from Hartnell College, and applied to their RN program which starts in August of this year. The other day, I got an acceptance letter saying that Hartnell College will take me into their RN program. I'm going to accept their acceptance offer. I didn't apply to any other program other than Hartnell.

One thing that sets Hartnell College apart from the rest of the colleges in this area is that Hartnell is the only college that I know of that does not use a waiting list. That means that everyone gets accepted according to their GPA. That seems like a positive to me as far as their quality. You will know that all of your classmates got in only because they were the best applicants.

I personally know more than half of the class that recently graduated from Hartnell College. Due to the impaction of nursing schools and the non-waiting list method of student selection, the quality of students admitted in the past 3 years have been extremely high. Despite being a two year program, many of the students have Bachelor's degrees in other disciplines. As a result of these factors and an excellent teaching staff, the quality and rigor of instruction is extremely high.

I'm aware that in recent years, the focus of compassionate instruction coupled with an unwavering standard of quality has resulted in a much lower failure rate than 3 years ago.

The breadth and depth of the staff available to provide classroom and clinical instruction is impressive. In fact, one of the instructors has a doctorate and has recently moved on to teach the master's program at UCSF. Despite the instructor's departure, the remaining staff was so strong that the departure resulted in a neglible impact.

Hartnell RN students enjoy some of the highest number of clinical hours statewide. This equates to greater hands-on experience and confidence upon graduation.

Today, I think that the Hartnell program is second to none.

I know this thread is old but I was just wondering if the program has changed since last year. What is the retention rate of the program? How would you describe the quality of it today?
