Harford CC Fall 2017

Published

Has anyone else applied to Harford's Fall 2017 Nursing program?

I recently attended their drop-in session, where we were given information on the new admission requirements, as well as a tour of the clinical labs, classrooms, etc. I was impressed!

Thank you! & yeah I called a few of the surrounding hospitals' recruitment offices and talked to a couple people about it. Depending on the hospital- as long as you intend on getting your BSN (which I do!) and you're enrolled in classes, they'll hire you and offer you tuition reimbursement. Which I like the sound of way better than having to pay it back myself lol. It was basically explained to me like hospitals get money for the specific purpose of spending on their employees education, so they kind of have to hire nurses with just their ASN with the intent on furthering their education. If they don't, they lose the money. At least that's what I was told. Either way, it works for me. & I'm registered for the Wednesday lab. Idk the difference between the 2 Wednesday labs, but if it matters, I'm the second group. You?

Oh okay I never knew that about them losing the money! Yeah most hospitals are negotiable with that rule, I think their are more ADN graduates honestly. It'll definitely work out for you. I am in the Wednesday group as well, Idk the difference either between the two sessions because they're both the same times. I'm registered for the first session.

I know! I honestly don't know if that's true or not though, lol... One of my family members has her MSN in nursing management and she told me that. I kind of wish I could do the program, I mean getting your BSN in 2.5 years. Whoa. That's a hell of an accomplishment, but like I said, that options benefits just don't weigh out for me. I have work, and EMT duty, and house hunting, and wedding planning to do... ugh lol. I know I'll be jealous when you guys are graduating, but you'll totally deserve it. Are you at HCC now or a transfer student? Are you finished with all of your prereqs? What do you do at Hopkins??

Sounds like you have a lot going on, I have a wedding to help plan in the fall too, its not mine though lol I could only imagine. But you'll get your BSN at your own pace! I am a student at HCC now, how about you? & I'm a Nursing assistant down in the Emergency Department, have been there for almost two years.

Yes I do have a lot going on, but all good things! & wedding planning is so fun- stressful but fun. & that's a cool job, I bet it's really interesting. Do you wanna be an ER nurse? I'm a vet tech & an EMT and I love emergency medicine, but I'm really not familiar at all with hospital people ER medicine lol, only pre-hospital stuff. I know we have a ways to go, and I'm sure our minds will change about things at some point, but I have wanted to be a flight nurse for as long as I can remember. I am at HCC now also. I'm in A&P2 currently, and also working on my last A&H elective this semester. I have micro over the summer and that's it for my prereqs. It feels like just yesterday I was in ENG 101 thinking it was gonna take me forever just to get my prereqs done. Now here we are!!!

You're so right! I've grown to love Emergency Medicine, especially down at Hopkins because you really never know what you're going to get/see. You get to learn about a little bit of everything, so it's really cool. I've always wanted to be in labor & delivery though. I've shadowed up there & liked it too. I also have done home care, and loved that too. So now I'm convinced I can work one full time and one PRN lol but we'll see. That's great you want to be a flight nurse, sounds extremely interesting & I think they make great money! I loved a&p 2, who's your instructor? But I know, I am in chemistry now, but I'm thinking nursing school is going to fly by.

Wow! You can do it all lol. I think already having experience in certain departments and with certain types of work will really help. It'll probably help in deciding what kind of nursing you want to get into also. I guess most people probably just have to get a job in a department they're interested in to see if that's where they want to be, so that's a nice advantage for you. & I've had Schaeffer for A&P1 & A&P2, he's great, I have no complaints lol :) Although, I honestly haven't really heard bad things about any A&P instructor... I have friends who have taken pretty much everybody. I always hear things about Rappazzo, but I took her for Biochem and I didn't mind her. Who did you take for Micro? I'm taking it over summer and it's with Ketchum. I don't know anybody personally who has taken him, but his review on ratemyprofessor.com isn't great... There's only 3 reviews but they pretty much all said he was HARD, a tough grader, and that he assigns of a lot of work. I'm kind of nervous about it lol. Do you know anything about the nursing program? I know we have class Monday and Wednesday, and clinicals are on Thursdays & Fridays, but do you know how those are going to work? Like do we have to attend clinical on both days, or does it go by the amount of hours you put in? Sorry so many questions lol. I just don't know much. HCC has offered a bunch of drop in sessions and stuff but I never attended any of them except for an ATB one when I thought I was going to do that. I just feel so in the dark. I know it will all be explained but it never hurts to ask if somebody else already knows.

Definitely. There's just so much to do with nursing, it's hard to choose one speciality honestly. Once you finish fundamentals of nursing, you can be a CNA at a hopsital, which I recommend, because a lot of times you'll have a job when you finish the nursing program, and tuition assistance. I had Rappazzo for A&P 1/2, I loved her lol, she was hard but I still remember a lot of stuff & studying skills. I had Grimm for micro, it was hybrid and actually pretty easy, I got an A. I don't know much about Ketchum, I know a lot of people either take Ford or Grimm but you should be fine, just might be a little harder lol. & I'm thinking clinicals are going to be Thursdays/Fridays 7a-3:30p on both days, just wondering when they'll start because I'm sure it wont be right in the beginning.

A friend I took my pre-reqs with is in her first semester at HCC now and the schedule was just the lecture and lab for the first two weeks, then simulated "clinicals" began at the college to prepare for on-site clinicals. Clinical is Thursday AND Friday, but it starts out being 7:30am-12pm for a few weeks and then gradually gets longer as the weeks go by.

I've also heard similar things about Ketchum for Micro. Do you have the option to take Professor Collins? She assigns a lot of work, but she prepares a study guide for every exam and really wants to see her students succeed.

Thanks coeurbattant! The info about the schedule is really nice to know- I think most of the nervousness and everything is just from not knowing anything about what it's going to be like, or what to expect, so any kind of info helps. & Unfortunately, I don't have the option to take Collins... I decided to take Micro over the summer to just get it out of the way as my very last pre-req and only have to worry about nursing classes during the program. The only teacher that offers the class over the summer is Ketchum. Oh well, it is what it is. Even if it's hard it's only a few weeks lol. I've been pretty lucky with all of my professors throughout my time at HCC so far, so even if he's awful and hard and I hate him lol, one bad experience out of however many professors I've had isn't bad I think. I still hope he's decent though! You know how ratemyprofessor can be... sometimes I feel like most of the students that rate are the ones that either really loved or really hated their professor. It's hit or miss. I would have loved the option to take Collins though! I actually took her for my prep chem class awhile back and loved her! Everybody else I've talked to has either taken Grimm or Ford, with no complaints there either, so I would have been confidant with literally any other option than the only one available to me lol. Thank you for the input!

Hey everyone, the school called me couple of weeks ago, and offered me a seat in the accelerated program. Yey to me. But now im really nervous about the program. I was also thinking of keeping my job and work only on weekends since i need money. I dont know if that will work. I read a post saying we wont have a life for a year while in the accelerated program... I'm freaking out

Hi. I was accepted in the accelerated program as well, and I am also nervous about this whole trying to balance school and work. All of the nurses I work with have been telling me how nursing school is now my only life. How I will literally have no time for nothing else, but of course, it was all worth it in the end. So they've pretty much freaked me out. Scared of what to expect. May is pretty much here though, so we'll find out soon. I guess I'll be meeting you soon!
