Hi All.....I know this is not a nursing question or a medical one either, but I do need some help, so if any of you can assist me, I will be extremely gratefull ! I have colored my hair for 25 years now. (dark brown).
Suddenly I have become allergic to the dyes and my skin/scalp gets red and blistered:madface:. So I have to stop with the chemicals on my hair. Now the problem is how do I "go gray gracefully" ? I do not want to look like a skunk with the white roots and the rest brown.... I am stressing over this, yet I am resolving to just go natural and stop being a slave to the bottle !
Any help would be appreciated. Oh... I am 50 ish.

How about wearing a wig until your natural color grows back in?
Her natural color is gray now. She wants it not to be but it is gray. She wants to know how to cover the gray without allergic reaction or how to gracefully go gray from the roots while the rest of her hair is its bleached color - brown, red, whatever.
Perhaps a colorist could give you highlights (they use foil for this process so dye wouldn't touch your scalp) to help "break up" the stark contrast between the gray hair and dyed hair.
You might also investigate the natural hair colors sold at health food stores. They may be less irritating.
Are you one of those women who can wear her hair short?

Yeah, I know!!!!
That's the whole point of wearing a wig!
She wears the wig until the roots grow out and her hair is all the same color once she cuts off the dyed ends!
Try a vegetable coloring, your hairdresser should know about them. Much easier on the hair and scalp.
Also, if you are going through menopause, this problem is NOT uncommon. The coloring may just need to be timed differently. Again, talk to your hair stylist, they know ALL about this stuff. (same thing happened to me)!
Eventually I started coloring my own hair again, but now I use Clairol Natural Instincts (washes out in a month). It makes the grey look like goldish highlights and no roots.
I agree with you Miss Calculation....Clairol Natural Instincts is wonderful stuff. The first time I used it I applied it all over. Now I just apply it to the roots, put a plastic bag over it and leave it for an hour. I know the instructions read 15 minutes, but I leave it on for an hour. (I know...but I tried a test strip first) The last five minutes I apply it to the rest of my hair to brighten it up.
I agree that the grey looks like goldish highlights.

Wow that's a toughie. I wonder if you could use henna. Or any of the temporary coloring products.
I wonder what Cleopatra and everyone else did before there was Clairol?
Could you maybe coat your scalp with steroid cream or Vaseline before the use of the Clairol?
