I had my nursing entrance interview yesterday which was the final step for admission into the April LPN program. 64 of us were interviewing for 24 spots.. we find out by March 1st.
Anyways these were the 5 questions they asked everyone. I'm curious how you guys would answer them and if you think my answers were ok?
#1 - Why do you want to be a nurse? I'll spare you the answer to this one as this is an "easy" and pretty generic question and answer for most
#2 - How would you handle a patient that has completely different and strong views from you such as religious or treatment wishes? I answered that I would never express my personal beliefs to a patient, that wouldn't be appropriate for a work environment. So the patient would never know I had different beliefs and I would absolutely treat them with respect and as long as they aren't asking me to do anything illegal, I will respect their treatment and care wishes.
#3 - Discuss a time when you had a run in with someone in authority and how did you handle it? Luckily I've never really had this issue, but I knew I couldn't not answer the question so I racked my brain for an incident and came up with one. I told them about the time the eye doctor I worked for (I was a patient care tech) was upset with me one day for the patients running really behind on time. I explained that we handled the situation by sitting down at the end of the day and explained what happened to lead up to the events, not giving excuses but just explaining what went on leading to patients being behind that day and everything was resolved. The key I said, was to talk everything through.
#4 - You are taking a nursing exam and one of your classmates is very obviously cheating. What do you do? I answered that that is never a fun situation to be in, but because this is nursing and we are literally dealing with patient lives.. that cheating should be taken very seriously so I would say something to the instructor and possibly even to my classmate to explain why I stepped in. I also said cheating is unfair to the rest of us that work and study hard to make good grades.
#5 - Nursing school is very time intensive and stressful. How have you set up your personal commitments to allow room to complete this program successfully? I answered that I am a stay at home mom with one of my kids in school so I actually have a lot of free time to study. I also have a VERY supportive husband who wants me to succeed as much as I do so I will have every opportunity to take the time I need to study and learn. I also answered that I thrive in the educational environment and studying and learning new things is what keeps me going in life, so it wasn't a burden but something I was looking forward to head on.
Sound ok? I was really nervous so some of the things I said could have been thought out and better said.. but it was a really on the spot questioning. Thanks for reading my novel if you made it this far

Sounds good. Only thing I would say is if you suspect someone of cheating, I wouldn't mention to fellow classmates.

+1. If I saw someone was cheating, I actually won't mention anything to anyone. Technically its none of my business and I believe in the old age adage: "what goes around, comes around". Their cheating will catch up with them.
yeah the cheating thing really threw me through a loop. I didn't know which response would be better.. to tell on said classmate or to leave it alone. I meant I might say something to the cheater, not the rest of my classmates

Good answer! I'm not sure how I would have answered the cheating question - I might have said that I was concentrating on my own exam and what any other student was doing was not my business; if the cheating was obvious to me I would have to think it would have been obvious to the instructor who would take the appropriate steps.
Good luck!
