Will be relocating to Pittsburgh area on graduation. I like the idea of 12h shifts. Down here in my area, 8h shifts are a thing of the past. Do you guys do 12's up there in acute care?

Many hospitals here do twelve hour shifts. Is there a particular hospital you are looking to work at? I also know of a few that do eight hour shifts, but will let you do twelves if you have a partner to work the other twelve. Another thing they will do is bring someone casual in from 7p to 11:30p to fill int he gap. Most places will try to work with you. You can post here or pm me and let me know what hosp and I'll be able to tell you. Another cool option that a particular hospital has here is a weekend program. My friend works two twelves, has full benefits and an increased hourly wage to make up for less hours. She's considered full time working two days a week. The drawback is that it is EVERY weekend. She has three kids so it works out realy well for her. Her dh is an engineer with a M-F 9-5 job. She said the other nice thing is that everyone working the weekend is part of the weekend program, so nobody is b****ing that they have to work the weekend. They very rarely have call offs b/c that's half of your workweek. She'll do 7a-7p Sat and Sun then to 7p to 7a the next weekend. I don't know if that's something you are considering, but I think it's a very cool idea.

P.S. Welcome to Pittsburgh!:balloons:

Thanks Elizabeth! Looks like I'm making friends up there already. MLOS is a great help in orienting me to the area as well. I hear UPMC Presby is a good place for new grads... any other suggestions? I'm thinking of a specialty in perinatal nursing.

I love the idea of the Baylor shifts too. It's early yet for me to be thinking of logistics but I just can't seem to help it. My whole family moved up there and that's where my heart is. Gotta finish school down here in Florida first. I want the transition to go as smooth as possible. It won't be until this time next year that I will be sending out resumes and making plans for an interview trip. Seems like forever.

I agree w/Elizabeth - both 8s & 12s are common, it just depends on the particular hospital & unit.

Seems weird to think about, but I'll be starting the job search in about 6 months. I'll be looking to work primarily nights, although the right weekend deal could work too.

Maybe look into UPMC Shadyside for perinatal or even Magee. They're really big though. Shadyside is a nics size. I really like their unit. Just a thought.

Almost all hospitals and even nursing homes are doing 4, 8, and 12 hr shifts.

Mercy and West Penn might have perinatal units too.
