Hi I am an British trained RN. I have worked as an RN in ITU for the last 6 1/2 years and also as an ECMO specialist. I am registered with the board of nursing in CA (just waiting for SSN) and should have my visa screen through within the next 3- 4 weeks. I am looking for an agency (or employer) that is will to sponsor me on the H1b visa in CA, can anyone help?

amehan in ortigas used to sponsor. my friend is in florida right now with an HB1 visa..

With the high unemployment in CA (just check out the state forum) you may find it hard to find a employer willing to go the H1b route

...since you mentioned ECMO, I would investigate and try to network with people from the few ECLS centers in the US and see if they are hiring. One way to do that is through the ECLS discussion board (which I believe is sponsored by University of Michigan Medical Center). Nurses who are highly trained in ECMO are definitely desirable and I know you guys do quite a bit of that in the UK.

How are you getting a SSN? When you say you're "waiting on" a SSN.. generally you cannot get a SSN until you are in the US with work authorization. Without a SSN you can't get a CA license.

Maybe the original poster passed the boards awhile back and is waiting to enter the US in order to obtain a ss#.

I registered with the board of nursing in CA prior to their new requirements of having a SSN before registering. As far as I am aware they will grant me a temporary licence to enable me to get emplyment and then I have to obtain a SSN as soon as I can when in CA to get my full licence. In regards to the previous post I am UK born and bred, so I would need a UK based agency.

CA will not issue a license even temporary without a SSN, this has been the case for several years it is only last year that the requirement to submit an application included a US SSN.

australiannursing.net which is based in England from what I've heard, was looking for specialty nurses specifically ITU nurses to be deployed in a Veterans Hospital. They will file about 30 nurses for premium processing to make the process faster. Not sure though if they did at this time...worth giving them a call.
