gum chewing-lip smacking bad manners

Published

I am ready to pull my hair out. I am working with an agency nurse in a small unit, just the two of us. She is chewing her gum so loud and smacking her lips, I just am afraid I am going to scream.

Bad enough she already trashed talked some of our Drs and our charting, and how we dont keep XYZ drug in the pyxsis.

Bad enough that I have to pull all of her paperwork off the computer and enter all of her labs and order all of her diets, but now I must sit here trying to chart listening to the gum chewing!!!

I dont want to be rude, the advice I would give to someone like me would be simply say "excuse me, but the gum chewing is bothering my concentration" yet I cant find myself to say those words.

Any other advice before I scream!!!!

Or you can just say: "Hun, I don't want to upset you but few patients complained about your gum chewing" I just want to give you heads up so it does not happen in the future... Any other questions? I am the best when it comes to manipulation :)

Maybe she doesn't know she's annoying. It sounds as though she may be nervous and that's how she deals with her nerves, almost like a smoker. Do you feel comfortable telling her how much it bothers you? If it annoys you, it most likely annoys patients.

I can't stand when people smack their gum!!! Think about how much better you will feel if you just tell her that her gum chewing is driving you crazy! Remember, she is agency and you don't (hopefully) have to work with her often.
