In Kaplan, it states that abortion is any pregnancy that terminates before the period of viability...but in class, they talked about abortion being before 20 weeks gestation.... is abortion any termination in pregnancy or is it specific to being before 20 weeks gestation? Any help would be much appreciated. Thx...My NCLEX is in 2 weeks... ughhh so nervous

I think you are confusing elective vs spontaneous abortions. There's a good explanation about 1/2way down. http://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/abortion
Thx bro... really appreciate it. I kept reading and found that abortion if beyond 20 weeks would be a part of parity but if before would be a part of gravida..ill check that link...im really glad i found this site..it has helped me study allot.

A viable pregnancy is one that goes beyond 20 weeks. A spontaneous abortion is a miscarriage that occurs before 20 weeks gestation. A medical abortion is the intentional termination of pregnancy (ITOP) that is normally done before 20 weeks as well. However depending on where the patient lives in some states I believe medical abortions can be done after 20 weeks. Gravida is the # of times a woman has been pregnant Para is the number of children she has birthed that were at least 20 weeks gestation. So if the patient has been pregnant 3 times with 2 spontaneous abortions and one child delivered at 39 weeks who is alive she is G3/P1. If your going into GTPAL she is G3/T1/P0/A2/L1
thats perfect... thanks for further explanation...makes sense now. I appreciate your time. thank you
