OMG!! Did they have to deliver the baby early? C-SEC or did they do surgery in utero? What?? Details!! I am assuming the babe needed surgery to stop the bleeding? You can't post that little blurb and leave us hanging!! Spill!
PS, glad they are doing well! Thanks to the knowledge and skills of a wonderful trauma team and NICU Godesses such as yourself!
Yikes! Yes...give us more! She was shot twice through the uterus and the baby survived AT ALL?! Truly a baby touched by God.
[Also, I noticed your quote. Had heard a long time ago that 7-monthers do better than 8-monthers. Seems like your quote kinda agrees with that (I mean I heard it A LONG TIME ago--like when I was a teenager, waaay pre-nursing days). My babies were 33-weekers and did OK (triplets, now hale healthy 12-year-olds).]
Mom went to Trauma, then to OR, she also had a bad arm wound. They were monitoring the baby who did ok initially, then got bradycardic, so they sectioned. Bad Apgars. 1-4-4-4. Baby intubated, Surfactant, was still ventilated when I saw him yesterday. Peds surgery is worried about nerve function in the baby's arm that was hit by the bullet, but there was a dressing on it when I saw it.
From what I read in the paper, only one male was in the car w/her, the other was a 41 y/o talking to them. An SUV pulled up, someone got out, went up to them, words exchanged, then opened up.
I was in another part of the nursery yesterday, just heard about it @ lunch.
My signature refers to premies who have been in the NICU for a while, are [post-conceptionally] 35wks. Some case manager thinks they're dischargeable because they're in an open crib and nippling all their feedings. I maintain that any 35wkr reserves the right to forget to breathe and turn blue, get septic, or in some other way ruin my day, and that they are NEVER ready to go home until they're 36wks!!
I'll keep you posted re: the GSW. Still can't believe it!!
Reading this story made me very sad, what a horrible way of entering the world. I hope the kid survives this and the arm will be functional.
I am however glad you shared the story with us. It sounds to me you could do with a little emotional support. Be nice to yourself you deserve it.

You're very perceptive! But it doesn't have to do with this baby. Thanks for the thoughts, they're appreciated. :)
Sorry, JW, this one got blood--had a pH of 6.96 aand a HUGE base deficit--not the kind of thing you can make up w/crystalloid.
I'll let you know after work tomorrow how things are going.

Teenage mom last night shot x2 through the uterus. Had been sitting in a car w/2guys--they're both dead. The baby got hit in the arm, and was bleeding, too. Both doing fairly ok today.
Unbelievable!!!
