I am considering a job at local military base as a GS10 nurse

can anyone explain the differences between GS and VN series nursing. Mainly leave accrual, step increase timelines etc. There is so much info online for VA nurses but nothing for  non VA nurses.
Are GS nurses title 38? I heard they are not.

any info would be GREATLY appreciated

Hi VAN MG, BSN

How long was your process and how long did it take before you were asked for a start date. I have completed my bg check and go for physical and drug screen next week. I'm still waiting for official offer though.

TO 2/9, tentative start date was 4/9 but it didn't happen. I received an email last week about choosing my start date which I chose 4/23 but havent heard since. ?

Did you recieve official offer already before being asked a start date and if so, how long after your official offer did they ask for a start?

Yes . I did everything.. I waz just told tgat vetpro and nursing board review were completed  but not the EQUIP. Last week is just an email fot a start date which I chose 4/23. So rralky 60 days from TO is their target to onboard. Obviously it didn't happen..

Were you told of recruitment incentive?

For VA nurses you can be "promoted" to nurse 2 or 3 by basicly showing your hard work, you write what you have been doing and basicly apply to a board for promotion consideration. If you get it you keep the same.job but get a raise. We also have step increases at set intervals and the president usually give us a small raise each January. Gs scale you may need to literally apply for a different job to rise up the pay scale. Some are posted as 9-10 with promotion potential, meaning you could get promoted/a raise but keep that same job up to a point. All the gs people I know have had to apply for new jobs with different departments to rise up the ladder. Indian health service also hires there nurses under the gs scale, ihs pay is very similar to VA, I have noticed that the dod is usually lower pay.

GS pay is much lower typically than VA title 38 pay scale. VA nurses start automatically with 5 weeks vacation, that is not true of GS nurses who start at 2 weeks. GS scale is pretty old and needs phased out, in fact there is talks of that, but I'm sure it will take years because nothing in the government happens very fast.

However, I am in the process of negotiating step pay so we will see what happens. I was told I had to accept the offer first then submit negotiation with all other documents requested.

I am currently in the same situation. Told to submit a request along with paystubs from my current employer. Can you tell me how it all worked out for you?

They will tell you to accept the position and then negotiate,  but that's how they screw you. Don't accept a low offer, they won't negotiate
