Hi, will anyone here be applying for the 2016 admissions for the CNL program at GRU in Augusta, GA?! If so could you share some of your career background/experience and stats! Also if some of you who are currently or have been in the program could give some input that would be awesome too!!
For those of you that are already students/have graduated from the program. I know this is a personal question but need some guidance. I am curious how much is needed to be taken out in loans if you are planning on not working for the entire duration of the program and plan on using loans to pay for all costs during the 16 months. What sources did you use to apply for loans? Also, is anyone familiar with the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program and if so have you set your loans up on a repayment plan that will allow you to take advantage of this program? I understand if these are hard to answer in a group forum so if its too personal please forgive me!
Hey y'all - I am a recent graduate of the program. An important question I do have for you is whether you are an in-state or out-of-state student. I was an out-of-state student, so my costs were quite higher than a lot of my classmates. I took out $92,000 total in loans to pay for the program plus costs of living. Luckily, I had no other debt going in, so that eases things up a little bit. If you are in-state, you can find the difference in tuition costs and subtract to figure out a ballpark of what the cost will be to you.
I have not yet entered repayment, but here is my understanding of the public service loan forgiveness: Basically, if you make on-time payments for 10 years - that is, 120 consecutive payments - you will have the rest of your loan forgiven. Based on your repayment plan, that can end up being the total interest, meaning the total amount of money you paid back is what you took out. You can look in FedLoan Servicing to see what types of plans for repayment there are, and what you may qualify for. In general, there is an algorithm telling you what you qualify for. If you fall under "Partial Financial Hardship," which means your debt is some pre-determined ratio to your income, you qualify for certain plans.
I hope this helped! Let me know if you need me to clear anything up or have other questions! As suffocated as I feel with all this debt, never in a million years would I make a different choice. This program is amazing, the faculty is amazing, you will learn so much, and you will have so much preparation thanks to the tremendous practicum you get in your final semester, especially compared to graduates of other programs. On Monday, I start a career at a top hospital in the Cardiac ICU and I cannot wait.
Thanks so much for your response!
Are you planning on participating in the loan forgiveness program?
Additionally, did you use private loans to fund the difference between what you needed and what federal loans you received?
Also, did you get to choose your plan for paying the loans off?
Sorry if these are dumb questions!
Not at all dumb ambake! I am definitely going to try to get loan forgiveness - I'd be crazy not to! Federal loans covered all of my need, so I didn't have to take out any private loans. I took out the Direct Unsubsidized and the Direct Grad PLUS loans - they will give you the amount that the school says its "Cost of Attendance" is, which includes estimates for cost of living. As far as my servicer has let me know, I will be able to choose my plan for paying off the loans, since my income compared to my debt amount is what it is. I think the bottom line really with the loans and all is that you will be OK! Seriously! Your plan for repayment will be based on your ability to pay, which is configured by your income. You will be able to work with your loan servicer and you will be able to pay off your loans at the pace that works for you - and most importantly, you will be able to do this because you will be able to find a stable nursing job out of graduation and you will excel in it! :)
