Grossmont College vs. MiraCosta College

U.S.A. California

Published

Hey everyone,

I reside in San Diego, CA, and I just turned in my nursing school applications to Grossmont Community College and MiraCosta Community College. Anticipating acceptance (cross my fingers), I have my heart set on MiraCosta Community College. However, it is a further commute than Grossmont, and it is also a 45-minute drive away from my job. I would have to relocate to somewhere central, or pick where I want to live closer to: either my job, or my school.

Before I make my final decision on which school I want to attend, I want to know the quality of the each program. I know the courses are going to be the same, but I'm more concerned about the quality of the instructors and how well each program prepares the students. Is there any way to compare the programs from each school? (Maybe I'm looking for personal opinions, since the only results I'm going to find on the internet are going to be quantitative data.) Or if anyone is reading this, please provide your personal opinion on the program if you attend either Grossmont or MiraCosta.

Thanks,

Melissa, CNA.

I went to Grossmont and I thought the quality of the instructors was great. I don't really know anything about Mira Costa, nor do I know anyone who actually went to Mira Costa. I had a great experience at Grossmont and I felt well-prepared for my first job after graduation. Also, Grossmont recently opened their state-of-the-art health sciences classrooms and sim labs. I got a chance to take a look at the new facility, and I would have loved to attend classes there.

What is the reason you have your heart set on Mira Costa vs. Grossmont. Sounds like it would be really inconvenient for you to commute to school. Whichever school you end up at, best of luck to you.

Just had a friend graduate May 2011 from MiraCosta CC ADN program and she highly recommends it! Wonderful and top-notch instructors and she felt well-prepared for the NCLEX! She passed!!

Best of Luck!!

Your friend must've been in the LVN-RN program because we haven't graduated our first ADN class yet. The first cohort started spring 2010 and are graduating Dec 2011.

I'm a current student in the ADN program at MCC. Honestly, I feel like all the nursing instructors so far are great lecturers; with the exception of one instructor in a non nursing, but required class. Almost all of the clinical instructors are/were great too. There was a little issue w/one of them being more a friend to the students and not teaching as much, but I heard it was being worked out. I like that the school has smaller classes (around 20 students in each cohort) because I always felt like I resources, such as lab time, were available to me.

With our program being relatively new, there were some kinks here and there, but we can tell that they are listening to us and that changes are being made. For example, one of the suggestions we made at the end of the 1st semester was put immediately put into use for the next batch of 1st semester students.

i just graduated from the first mc adn cohort mentioned above (december 2011). obviously, there is no way for me to compare the two programs since i was only in the one at mc. however, i can tell you that i thought all of the instructors were great and i have tremendous respect for all of them. they all have different personalities and teaching styles, but you will find that at any college. i studied very hard and earned good grades. the instructors will push you and all have high expectations. with the amount of clinical experience i earned while in school, i can honestly say that they need to push you or you will not make it. this is by no means an easy profession. get all that you can out of your classes and look beyond the different teaching styles. you will make the most of you education. good luck!
