Greetings fellow ER nurses

Hello to you all. I am an LPN, I work in the ER by my home. I work 12.5 hour shifts and spend most of my day doing the work the RN's dont want to do, or can't be bothered doing. I also hear constant remarks like LPN's are little pretend nurses and so forth. I run from 7a-7p, I give the majority of the meds, I do the majority of the wound care, I put the patients on the monitor, get them in their gown, put in the foley's.....sounds like complaining yes it does but understand this. Each RN in my ER has a district of 3 rooms-2 pts per room, thats 6 patients. 99.9% of the time, the ER is an ICU holding ward, as the LPN, I am not supposed to take care of an ICU patient, I also can not hang blood, push IV meds, access a port or do an initial assessment. My LPN district is 3 RN districts, therefore, I have 3 RN's to assist, 9 rooms which equals 18 patients. The 3 RN's I am with all need me to help them, inevitably at the same time. God forbid Im busy with another nurse and so and so is looking for me, then they run to the charge nurse and say that Im not helping. If any of you have LPN's that work in your ER, I hope you treat them better than I get treated at my job.

I am treated just about the same as all the rest of the nurses There is very little I don't do I get the bad traumas just same as any one else. I would have to say the only thing I don't do is hang blood. In our ED the Docs don't yell RN do this or LPN do this They call our names, as do the charge nurse. The charge nurses trust me as I do them.

Sorry to here that. I always try to treat the LPN's (and techs, assistants nicely).

Unfortunately, some of them I don't. But that stems from the "treat others as you treat them" theory.

I hope everything works out for you. I'm sure you are a wonderful nurse.

I always said, there are physicians, RN's, LPN's, Meics, EMTs, techs and assistants. I wouldn't let work on my dog, (if I had one).

However, there are also physicians, LPN's, EMTs, medics, assistants and nurse techs I would trust with my life.

The boards verify you are minimally competent to do your job, and as they say it's just a piece of paper.

Let your wisdom, knowledge and actions speak for you. Anybody can say they are great at their job.

I work with one fulltime LPN in the ED. I would trust her with my life and my family's lives. She is in school to get her RN and we are all excited because she will make an excellent RN.
