Nobody is talking about their GRE scores so I thought it will be nice to start a new thread. It may interest students applying to MEPN programs!

Did you get in the MEPN program at UCSF? What were your GRE scores (V, Q, Writting)?

Are you a prospective student? What score did you get on the GRE if you already passed it?

...

I thought about saying something about ending hunger and finding a cure for the common cold...but I didn't want to sound patronizing.

yeah but you can do it! worry about not seeming as patronizing after you receive the Nobel Prize (in nursing) ;)

I have been doing some volunteering, but am not sure if it qualifies as patient care. Can someone offer some examples?

Hello.

Okay, GRE:

V: 620

Q: 730

A: 5.0

I was rejected from the MEPN program's FNP track two years ago- with completely different GRE scores (V 640, Q 710, A 780- before they had the writing sample!), the same year I got into medical school. I chose not to go to MD school, as it's just not the life I want to live. Now, thankfully, after working in a primary care clinic, I also know I do NOT want to be an FNP, but want to work with really sick patients in a hospital setting doing acute care.

Patient care is important in my opinion, so you don't get stuck doing something you don't want to do, and you figure out where you fit in.

Sweet.

I remember my rejection letter came relatively early in December, about a week before I finished a class. I'm certainly keeping my fingers crossed for an acceptance (aren't we all?).

Good luck everyone.

Que te vayan bien.

Hello Star, I'd shake hands but not possible under the circumstance :D -nice to meet you no less.

Got a few q's for ya if you don't mind: what was your MCAT? where did you apply? where did you get accepted? Just wondering.. Also, why do I get the feeling that you don't quite know what you want yet? Is it just me, or..? If not, what made you choose FNP?

Hi Newtonian. I don't mind. I actually know exactly what I want to do- I applied to the ACNP track at UCSF. I've worked in both hospitals and clinics, shadowed a ton of people, and know that Acute Care is a perfect match for my personality (plus I love really sick patients- I like the challenge). I chose NOT to go the FNP route because I really like the ED and ICU. As to why you get the feeling that I don't know what I want yet, I cannot tell you, as I'm very certain.

As to MCAT/med school. I applied and decided not to go over 3 years ago, and spent the last few years getting more experience to try to figure out where I wanted to be in medicine. I watched friends change, even those who were committed to being the same wonderful people they always had been. I didn't want to follow that route, and I enjoy balance in my life.

My MCAT was a 33. I got into UC Davis, UC San Diego and one other school out of state. I interviewed at all the UCs. I just didn't want to be a doctor, but I love working with patients. I've seen the transformations in healthcare. I'm nearly 30, and I'm very excited to become an ACNP.

That's all.

Nice to meet you.

Hope everyone ends up very happy with whatever comes to them. Good luck to us all.

Your story sounds a lot like mine, minus the better MCAT and GRE score of course (I only got a 30S and 1050 GRE). Unlike you, however, I did not get accepted to UC given my 3.6 GPA. Davis saw my years of experience in nursing as succeeding in it, which is how I found out about UCSF's master's program after their encouragement. I also applied to AC-NP as a backup to medschool, but it's looking more like it'll probably be what I'll end up doing if UCSF does accept me. I am 33 after all, and getting to the point where I'm having to pause every now and then just to make sure I gave the correct number for my age.

I don't know if you can relate, but I was a surgical tech in the Navy - I was a die-hard corpsman, if you will. For years all I've ever wanted to do was become the surgeon I was passing instruments to, but somehow ended up in nursing once I got out. Long story short, everytime I fix my car I'm constantly reminded of how I could use my dexterity to fix people instead of some old jalopy.

I feel I could've done better on the MCAT so I'm going for it again in April. I've made peace with God to accept my fate regardless of the outcome.

Thanks for responding to my inquiry. Maybe we'll get to meet each other someday? -we'll see come June. Good luck in the meantime;)

Can someone give me examples of what sort patient care they are looking for?

Hi Hopeful Nurse, I am not surethat UCSF is looking for something "specific" but I know that UCSF does want to see that you demonstrate competency working with others, especially within diverse groups. Regarding "nursing experience," I think volunteer work in a medical setting (nursing home, community clinic, and so on) is helpful.

Hi CAtoDC,

Thanks for answering my question. I appreciate it. I think that question is a little old, heehee. :chuckle

I actually got invited to interview for UCSF this January and am waiting for a letter of yeah or ney.

Thanks!!

Hey all!

I am both excited and scared to apply to MEPN this summer...Just wanting to know what you all think... I just received my GRE scores (V 550, Q 800, W 4). I was shocked at how badly I did on the verbal and writing compared to my math. Do you think it's worth retaking? I know if I try again that my math score will drop for sure, but my verbal and writing score will improve too....

Thanks for all your input :)

BTW, congrats Hopeful Nurse!!!

Hi! If you don't mind my asking, what were your GRE scores?
