Grand Canyon RN-BSN

Published

Is there any updated information? I have been in heavy contact with them and am looking at taking their RN-BSN program. I work with a GCU grad and she has nothing but positive things to say, but I want more opinions. ?

Any pro's and cons? Thankfully the only class I'm missing is stats and that is offered in the actual BSN program. I'm a bit nervous as my algebra skills are way old. If anyone took this class, do you have any advice?

No one cares if you have a BSN. You just need to go out and get a social life, that will keep you busy.

...that's kinda almost the dumbest thing I've ever heard... shame on people for not supporting you.

Yes, Ive experienced it, and all of the naysayers on my end were fellow ADNs that have the intention of staying at their current job forever. I'll stay at my job as long as I can, too, but in this day and age of Big Business in health care, if my company tanks, I can't stand the thought of some fresh-out-of-BSN-school-new-grad with zero experience getting hired before ME, with >20 yrs under my belt. But, it would happen, because that's just life these days in the nursing profession.

Yes.. I probably will work to 75, if my health is good. I need to..

Why would I not pursue more? The main one is only 62, she has semi-retired..

Has all the answers. That is 20 more years!!

You are 57, what difference does it make? No one cares if you have a BSN. You just need to go out and get a social life, that will keep you busy.

I have a friend, 54 yrs old, ADN, has worked in critical care for 25 years, spotless record. Moved to Denver last month. Can't find a job to save her life. With the influx/oversaturation of new grads these days, the hospitals are choosing them (new BSNs) over her. Unless she gets busy and gets her BSN, I imagine her social life is about all she's gonna have to keep her busy.

And yes, what if the current situation ends... no one will hire a 3 year diploma RN... after the BSN rule goes thru...

Is that 2015?

Oh no.. I actually was considering moving to Denver to be with my daughter. Guess that is out of the question

I have to stop considering the nay sayers... as they are all in different situations...

Case and point, your friend prism...

Are you currently in the program? Or considering it?

I am on my own.. I have no spouse or anyone to fall back on... I am thinking..

reality check, no choice.

It's not really a rule, it's a standard that most hospitals are striving for: 80% BSN staff by the year 2020, as recommended by the IOM, based on research that supports significantly improved patient outcomes when managed by a BSN vs. ADN. See? I actually learned something in school! LOL So much for "busy work with no purpose". I know I sound p.o.'d, but I tire of this topic, and your friends would not have an enjoyable time with me if we sat down for lunch :argue:

Prism, I wish we could have lunch.. I have to say.. I would love for you do have lunch with a few.. they are in dire need of a heads up!

I am sorry if I have gone on... blah blah blah..

I have always believed in lifelong education.. it is to me necessary and why for me at the moment, I am unhappy.

I know school is not easy.. I know it takes much out of you, but what you gain.. NO one can take away from you.

Currently in class 7 of 12, should be done end of January-ish. One of the best decisions I ever made. I'd encourage you to change your thought process a little. Many of your posts state your age (as if 57 is near death or at least nearing the end of a career), and that you "have no choice" but to pursue a BSN. Honestly, and this is coming from the heart, unless you view the advanced education as a benefit to you and something you actually want to do (for yourself), the end result will be nothing more than a piece of paper proving that you suffered through a pointless program just to get the Golden Letters. I don't want someone with that negativity on my team, I'm sorry, just sayin', I really don't. I want to surround myself with positive people (as in this thread and the other one) who see this as an opportunity for personal growth that just HAPPENS to have the added benefit of better job prospects at the end of it. Yeah, that's my :twocents: !
