graduate school for nurses

Published

I was advised by staff to start a thread for nurses pertaining to graduate school until staff decides if there will be a forum just for graduate school.

I thought this could be a place for nurses interested in going to graduate school, nurses in graduate school, and nurses who have finished graduate school to share their experience and questions. Maybe those in graduate school or who have finished graduate school can help those interested in it.

So, what specialty are you interested in, where do you go or want to go or have graduated from? Online or traditional? What is the experience like? Anyone in direct entry MS programs? Are you in a nurse practitioner MS program or a different type of nursing MS?

I am a retired school nurse teacher and elementary educator looking to go to graduate school for nursing. After taking a refresher course in med surg, I have been considering many options including school nursing MS, pediatric nurse practitioner (Can you do this without hospital experience since nursing school?), informatics, administration, child psych.(have not been able to find such a program?), case management, patient education (PARTICULARLY FOR CHILDREN). I have looked into so many things that I am totally confused. I have even looked into a direct entry MS proigram, because my BSN is so old. So any comments or suggestions on my situation would be appreciated. For personal reasons, I cannot work right now, but I am able to go to school online. I am considering the online Stony Brook Pediatric Practitioner and Clinical Specialist Program. Anyone familiar with it?

I am very interested to get answers to my questions and also to hear where you are and what you are doing in the world of graduate education for nurses. I hope we can all help eachother.

Thanks!

Hello everyone ! This is turning into quite a support group. I, too, will start my ANP August 29. Frankly speaking, everytime I think about starting school, I get nervous and nauseated. I worry about being organized and how I will get everything done that needs to be done, including the house and kids. I guess everything will fall into place when the time comes. I will be taking adv. patho, theory and epidem. I plan to graduate May 2008. Ironically, that is when my oldest son will graduate from high school. What a party that will be. WOO-HOO.

My school did not require the GRE if you had an undergrad GPA greater than 3.0. Thank God !!

Good luck everyone !! Keep in Touch, we are all in this together!

Thanks for your reply. Would you be willing to share some information with me as far as what school are you applying to. My GPA was above 3.0. that would be very helpful.

thank you.

Hi, I've been thinking about a MSN degree since I finished my BSN online this past spring. My problem is that I really enjoyed the learning but don't have a real focus on any particular emphasis. Also, I really enjoyed doing my BSN online. Anyone know about online MSN programs? Any info would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

Thank you. I will look into it. I would like to find a school that offer PNP or FNP. I would like to find one that does not require the GRE...

MU does not require the GRE as long as your GPA for the last 60 hours of your BSN is above 3.3 - Hope this helps. They only do the PNP online. They do have a CNS online though, which you can do adult with...

Thank you I will look into it.

Everyone gives such great advice regarding graduate school!!Please help. I will start a graduate online FNP program this fall. I plan on taking 2 courses---patho and theoretical foundations. Is this too much for starters. I will register in a few weeks and really need advice. Tulip, you mentioned you taught graduate school. Are 2 classes too much for starters or should I take one? I work full time, (2) 12 hour shifts Sat. & Sun. and work (1) 12 hour shift per pay period. Also what is a starting salary for a graduate FNP?

I have the same question. I wanted to begin with just one course. Is that usually ok with the school? Krisssy

Hi, I am in a FNP program. It is a total of 9 semesters, I have 2 left to graduate!!!!

My first semester, I was nervous about working and school, so took only one class. Since then, I have taken 2-3 classes/semester and managed to continue working three 12 hour shifts/week. It is difficult, but can be done.

Good luck! Right now I am enjoying my VERY short semester break of 4 weeks and loving every minute of it. I CANNOT wait to finish!

That's good to know, glascow. I'm starting my first semester in September (CNM), and am planning to take 2 classes. Problem is, I am also starting work for the first time, and I hope my orientation isn't going to be to stressful too take classes at the same time. Did anyone start their program as soon as they began working?

I am starting a thesis based research masters in nursing this fall AND a new positon as a nurse manager this fall as well.

First year classes are two mornings a week... support from hospital to attend (not money but for attending classes). Am I crazy?? Probally.

I have always been a high achiever and busy person...so I look at this from a challenge perspective....I always have loved a challenge!

Hi all:

I've registered for Theories of Nursing and Patho I, and starting next week. Here goes nothing. Good luck to all of you starting.

I am either going to Stony Brook or Missouri, and I plan on taking one course to start. starting jan 2006 Krisssy
