Graduate Nurse for the PACU

Published

I graduate in May and have started the job search. I currently work in an OR as a tech (its a pretty sweet job). I have a job lined up as a circulator in the OR come May if I want it. However, I don't know if I am pretty certain that I will be bored quickly. I have scrub experience and that is the one thing about my job I love however, I won't get to do that as often if I am a circulating nurse. I have a great raport with the entire department including the surgeons and I hate to leave the unit. I have recently decided that I enjoy critical care and would like to work in PACU. Most critical care units in the area hospitals hire graduate nurses because they can mold them. Do you think the PACU is something I should pursue right now or should I get more experience first? Any suggestions on what I can offer to my supervisor to ensure her that I will be fully prepared for the job?

Specializes in ICU.

Not sure about your facility, but mine requires 2 years critical care experience for PACU nurses. This might be an obstacle in your case.

Specializes in critical care, PACU.

same with the ones in southern california

Where I work, the PACU requires 1 year of critical care experience. I am currently in the MICU and will be transferring to the PACU as soon as my 1 year is up.
