So of course I'm bitter that this horrible economy exists right around the time I'm graduating from nursing school. I will be graduating in May with my BSN and I'm looking for a new grad job in the Philly area, and possibly the surrounding suburbs. I want to work in the city but I'm willing to travel a little bit to the surrounding area if need be (I have to take what I can get these days!). I've applied to numerous hospitals and have heard next to nothing. I've had one interview so far. But that hospital I interviewed at started a hiring freeze right around the time I was interviewed (go figure!) so I obviously won't be getting a job there anytime soon. I have another interview in 2 weeks at a different hospital in Philly and I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
I was wondering if anyone knows for sure of hospitals/nursing homes/any place that hires GNs in the area that actually are hiring new grads. Or if anyone can tell me places that ARE NOT on a hiring freeze so I know not to waste my time looking at a certain hospital. I love how recruiters try to beat around the bush about saying whether or not the hospital is on a freeze or not..so irritating :banghead:I know CHOP's website as well as Main Line Health and TempleU hospital websites have positions for new grads and I've applied to all of them already.
I'm really worrying. I'm going to have to start to pay my loans back soon after graduation and my per diem nursing aide salary ain't gonna cut it! What the heck do I have to do? Stalk the human resources department of every hospital? I'm a dean's list student with a 3.56 GPA and it boggles my mind that it's this hard to find a flippin job. And it looks like I'm going to be jobless for awhile. The economy sucks.
Any advice? I'm pretty desperate..

I totally feel for you...I graduated in December, passed the NCLEX in February, and I'm still job hunting. I've applied to CHOP, HUP, Temple, Jeff, and hospitals in the surrounding Philly/New Jersey area. I had an interview at a hospital about 25 miles outside Philly, and I'm still waiting to hear back from them. I'm applying from out of state, so I don't know how that impacts my job search.
Let me know if you hear anything!

Hi.
I read your posts from a year ago, and I'm wondering if either of you were able to find jobs in the Philly area, and if so where..?
I'll be graduating soon and will likely be in the same situation as you are/were (hopefully the latter).
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! :)
Thanks!

I graduated in August 2010, passed the boards in November. This was my second degree. Applied to many jobs, especially at Temple. Have not had any return calls. Tried calling a couple of hospitals I applied to about my application status. Was told would receive a phone call if nurse recruiter was interested in interviewing me, or to reapply to position if do not hear from recruiter in 4 weeks. Not even having any luck in hospitals that offer nurse residency programs. Getting extremely discouraged. I feel like I wasted my time and money returning to school. Also, I am sick of hearing about a nursing shortage. If there are no jobs, there obviously is not a nursing shortage.

I think many of us feel your pain and are in the same boat. My sense is that the Phila with a plethora of nursing schools and a large, established nursing work force, is among the toughest nursing job markets in the country. The overwhelming majority of my May 2010 graduating class have been unable to find nursing jobs. The ones that did, in almost all cases, were those that were already working as CNAs or PCTs.
I have been unsuccesful in finding a job as an RN but I did recently get a call back regarding my application for a PCT position at a local hospital. So one strategy in this dismal job market may be to take a step back in order to take a step forward.

I've seen a lot of jobs for Lpn or Rn new grads but sadly they are not in philly mostly Philipsburg and Wilkes Barres.I graduated in Dec applied for millions of jobs ,but mostly I get the same reply need a year experience.Which I'm not sure if ill ever get since I have no exp.I also applied for Cna job but was told that I needed a yr experience also.I thought it was ridiculous since my school was location near Wilkes Barre and they hired new nurses but sadly Philly is just awful I suppose.Even home health wants you to have a yr,so its like a lose lose situation.
