GPC Fall 2014 hopefuls

Published

Hi everyone! Just putting feelers out to see who is planning to apply to GPC for next Fall. I am taking my last pre-req, A&P II, this semester at GPC (well, almost last, still have to do that one credit Research class), and pondering when to take the TEAS. Before this semester I was out of school for a couple of years, and had kind of deferred my desire to attend nursing school. But it kept calling me, and I realized I HAVE to go for this now before my Science pre-reqs expire. GPC is actually the only school I've been able to find so far that lists them as good for six years as opposed to the usual five.

I'll be honest, I think I have a chance, but I also think it's a long shot. A lot is riding on how well I do on my TEAS, and getting an A in this class. In the beginning I was feeling very low about my chances, but recently my mindset has shifted, and I am feeling that hunger and drive to be accepted to nursing school. I definitely don't lack the brains, but I'm in recovery, so I have a spotty academic record. If I make an A in this class I will have a 3.0 in my Science pre-reqs and a 3.6 GPA for all the pre-reqs combined.

I also have concerns about my background check, as there are a few things on there, the most serious of which is very old - 16 years. So . . . one part of me knows that I have to cultivate an attitude of "whatever it takes" to get in. Retaking classes, applying for LPN as well, whatever I have to do.

It's pretty daunting to feel so simultaneously hopeful and excited about having a chance, and dwelling on the negative factors and seriously big mistakes that may kill my chances.

I'm really having to take it one step at a time. And every time I see someone in the cafeteria wearing the student nurses uniform I just think about how much I want to be wearing that uniform myself. It's something I really need for my life, my self-esteem, my family, to pursure this successfully. So that's me.

Where are you all in your journey? What are your concerns, struggles, hopes, and mindset? I look very forward to hearing from others. Even though we're competing against each other, we're still in it together and I think support is so valuable.

Tell me your story!

Thank you keepmovingrn. Are you currently in the GPC nursing program? ?

Hi there!

No I'm a 2012 graduate:-)

Let me know if you all have any questions, I'll be happy to help.

Hi there, what was your schedule like? Were Instructors trying to weed you out...shouldn't have considering how their reputation has improved.

Hey, my schedule the 1st semester was: class Tuesdays (9-4:30), plus another day for whatever else the make you come to school for and then I had Saturday clinicals. So, 1st semester was anywhere from 2-3 days a week (I was in the bridge program). 2nd semester we merged with traditional accelerated track (during summer semester)-schedule was crazy: busy with either classes or clinicals at least 4 days a week. Summer semester classes where: OB (1st 5 weeks), Psych (8 weeks) and PEDS (last 5weeks). Summer was a beast! Last semester was good. Only went to school for exams :-) and then preceptorship.

Side note: it you get admitted into the program they do what called a (lottery) for those students who want to graduate early it's called the accelerated program. This is where you would have the 3 classes during the summer and this is where students fail out if you work or don't put in 110% because it's fast and there's no room for failing a test. Just being honest. As far as the "weed out" I don't believe in this whole saying. They can't fail you if your passing your test and that's your control. I will tell you they aren't gonna give you sh$& but have to earn it. Aside from a few teachers they help very little.

Thank you for that info always hopeful! I took micro over the summer and that was horrible. I made an A, but it was horrible. Can you contrast that summer term for me to taking a science pre-req during the summer? Is it similar? Is it far more intense? If I can make atleast a B I would try to wing it, but I remember my summer totally sucking with micro.

Micro within itself is a very intense and complicated subject because so much of the concept overlap one another. It is a very integrated and in depth subject. I took chem 1212 in the summer and it felt like my heart was about to stop!!! Summer classes are not the problem for me. Chemistry is the problem...at least it is for me. I made a B in the summer and earned most of it!:-) Instructors know when their subjects are hard and some will give you a break, but you have to show them that you are trying your best.

No comparison. Nursing school is far more tougher. But if you aren't doing the accelerated track will choose just one class to take during the summer: OB, Psych or PEDS not all 3 unless your in the accelerated track.

Hey keepmovingrn,

I have a question for you. Is the accelerated program available to the traditional nursing students or just to the nurses in the bridge program? I was under the impression that the traditional students could take a couple of the classes during the summer just to decrease the work load for the following semester, but they would still graduate in the spring rather than at the end of fall..

If this route is available to the traditional students, I'll definitely stop working and focus solely on the program to graduate early!

Thanks a lot for giving us so much information!

Sorry about that, I got confused with the usernames. Thank you!!

No, the bridge program and traditional track accelerated are different tracks. They just meet in the middle during the summer and graduate together in the end. Traditional track students who want to graduate in December instead of May can put their name in for the lottery and pray they get picked. How many traditional track students that get picked for the accelerated program depends on how many bridge students that pass 1st semester. I think 11 traditional students got picked out of the 40 something that put in for it.

HTH

Oh okay. Is the lottery random or do they base it on the student's performance in the nursing program?

Random. It's a drawing

Random. It's a drawing

So traditional track students take classes in the summer as well? :(
