2.35 GPA too low for Acc Bacc BSN Program?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello All,

I am in search of some serious, honest advice. I have a 2.35 GPA from undergrad of which clearly school was not my priority. I also lost my mom my sophomore year and do genuinely feel that played a role. Anyways, after college I participated in AmeriCorps NCCC, spent 3 years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the Dominican Republic and now am a Public Health Educator for Planned Parenthood. I really want to be a nurse. I think it's where my life journey has been leading for awhile, I am very passionate about HIV/AIDS prevention, speak fluent Spanish and have incredible experience in youth development. I have started taking my pre-reqs, Human development and A and P. I have an A and B and plan to get A's in the rest. Does anyone think I have a chance to get into an accelerated BSN program with such a low GPA? Can I make an argument with my experience and a good pre-req GPA and good letters of rec?

Specializes in Operating Room.
3.9?! Congrats on that GPA, but how did you get C's in A&P?

Last I remember, psychology courses are not hard-hitting as a class such as A&P.

I believe you have a chance. I had a 2.3 undergad GPA. My dad passed away before I started college. I think that had to do with it too. Yes GPA is a part of it, but I think if we can explain the main reasons that affected our GPA and prove that we are making improvements since then, that that will be taken into account. I'm actually very proud of your work in the Peace Corp! Keep it up!

I agree with this post. I myself had a 2.23 GPA in undergrad, even though it was Biology and Chemistry - a lot of schools want to tell me no because higher GPAs from easier degrees apparently are just as hard. So, my advice to you is to take the prereqs and make all A's and B's. Then apply to schools that only take the prereq GPAs like the one I'm applying to. I didn't get in for the 3rd time because the GPA requirement for prereqs jumped to 3.533 and I have a 3.283 with an overall GPA of 2.3. But, I got into Oklahoma City University last January (which fell through b/c my roommate backed out at the last minute). I'm not as careless as it sounds (lol).. I was very much afraid to take out a $60k loan (OKCU). If you tell them (after you apply and get accepted) that you can't afford that kind of tuition, they will throw you a scholarship to take $5,000 off. If you apply way ahead of time, like my friend did, she got $10,000 off her tuition. The school I have to wait for is within driving distance of my house and is a lot cheaper. I'm saving up to pay out of pocket for at least half my tuition. DON'T just accept the first place to accept you! West Coast University accepted my brother before I told him they were $130,000 for a BSN. Alot of these more expensive schools out there are for rich kids whose parents can afford them. Don't get stuck with a $50,000+ loan just because they will take you. Try to look around and determine what you want. But yeah... in the end, your prereqs will be enough to get you into some of these schools. You just have to look for them! Chin up!!!

Your chances would be better if you focused on applying to accelerated BSN programs at private universities. The private schools are less competitive about their grade point average requirements because the tuition tends to be very expensive.

For example, my close friend has a BS degree in public health. Her overall GPA is 2.6, and her GPA in the nursing prerequisite classes is a 2.5, which is not so stellar. She applied to nursing programs at state universities and community colleges, but her GPA was no match against the applicants who had 3.8 and 4.0 grade point averages.

She applied to a 12-month accelerated BSN program with a price tag of $42,000 and was accepted. It was three semesters (summer, fall, and spring) that cost $14,000 per semester.

HI THERE:)

Which school did she apply to for 12-month accelerated bsn with $42k??

Thanks!:coollook:

If your still on this website please send me this spreadsheet you speak of. I am in a similar situation on my GPA is about a 2.5-2.6. I am new to this website and I don't know how private messaging works, hopefully I get a response this way. Thank you!

I am in the same boat. I have a BAS degree and too low a gpa to qualify for BAS program. This is a challenge, but we still have a leg up because of the 4 year degree. There is NOTHING wrong with getting an ADN from an accredited community college. If this is your dream, then NOTHING will stop you. I am choosing to take anatomy and physiology 1 and 2, in hopes of acquiring a good grade, since my sciences are too old, I will have that as a prerequisite anyhow. The LPN route was also a thought, but that would be moving backward in a sense, and in the long run, will be more school and debt after all is said and done. Consider retaking a couple of sciences or maths, to make your gpa higher, and then you can stay at the same CC, or move onto another CC that offers the ADN program. Good luck on your journey. It is sure to be one hell of a ride.

The accelerated programs to which I'm applying each require a 3.0 GPA or higher. However, I would contact the programs that you're interested in and get their advice. You could also apply and explain your GPA within the application. It never hurts to try! Good luck!

I am planning on applying to accelerated bsn programs in a few months. I had a horrible freshman year--went to school full-time and worked almost full-time, messed up my GPA, namely my science courses because of the extra work and lab hours. I've done tons of research and I agree with what a lot of people are saying--it seems the private schools are more lenient. I think going about this accelerated degree is a bit different from a traditional undergrad--I would look for specific schools you are interested in and call them and speak to someone in admissions. I have done that and it's so helpful because I know what I have to do for certain schools to makeup for the shortcomings (low GPA, bad grades in science courses from my freshman year undergrad)

Hi 2BJenurse, may I also have this list? My email is [email protected]

Thanks!
