I have read all the threads on this forum and have asked around other forums looking for anyone in the Army Reserve Nurse Corp.

When I get my ADN next May I am thinking about enlisting and would like to hear experiences of people who have joined recently. How long was the training at Ft Sam and what was it like? How were things on the weekends you worked. Deployments?

Thanks so much for the speedy response!! & the Info!

I had noticed on the OBCL web site packing list that they are required, yet I've read several posts in here about some having them and they WERE REQUIRED and yet others that didn't. As for the Commissioning... My recruiter said I didn't NEED them, yet I notice all pictures of folks taking Oath, wearing them!!??

As for having them for my Unit...Well I will be attending my unit BEFORE I go to OBLC..So... I don't know If I will need them for there right away or not. My recruiter just told me to get my basic BDU and berret..So, I will be talking with him about it again i guess.

Thanks Again!!

Hi there SeastwoodRN:

I have been away from home doing a SRP but I was able to beg and borrow a computer to check out my mail and I saw your post.

If you are going to join up with your TPU before you go to OBC then hopefully your sponsor will show you the "ropes" and what you need uniform wise. The new Blue uniforms have been started to be issued out but I think the official stop date for the green Class A's is sometime 2009(?) Maybe you could check out AR 670-1 (just goggle AR 670-1 or go to ASK.COM) that reg will tell you exactly what you are required to wear now (Class A, ACUs, APFT etc)

I have my paperwork/packet in, hope to go AC. Hey, Welcome to Army Nurse Corps! Hooah!

bye for now,

Wow, the responses here Are more informative, supportive & quicker than they are on the goArmy discussion boards!! Thanks to you for the response and info!!!

I haven't actually decided yet IF I am going to sign up with the TPU program or not.

I am signing reserve, as I had prev. mentioned. But as my recruiter describes the requirements for TPU, I would need to attend a brick and mortar College & I am working on my BSN via internet through Indiana State University. It works out rather nicely for me to cont. schooling & work fulltime as an ASD RN as well as my duties as wife and mother.

I'm not sure about a sponsor...my recruiter hasn't even mentioned anything about having one. So I do not even understand that, or how that works. Who, where & when??? I assume that I could be assigned one from my unit? I don't know. I can't even find anything to research my unit. I would like to see info about my unit, number of reservists in my CSH, and thier deployment history. But I am not able to locate this info.

I am even still at a loss about the new transformation for the reserve component of OBLC.

I am currently working Psych as it was the only position availabe immediately following passing my boards. I found the Army Nurse Corps while searching frantically for positions for Med-Surg / Critical Care. The training seems unparalleled to that in the civillian sectar!! However, it is all very confusing at times, trying to become aclamted to all the acrnyms, and understand who, what, where & when is all to be done or required in preparation to take Oath.

Thank you to all of you responding!!! Thanks you for the support and the Comeraderity!! I look forward to working with you and further communications with you!!

Hello again,

Yet another (?)...

You said your Class A's are being completed now... did you get Blues or greens? I researched quite a bit yesterday, what I could find. AR 670-1 hasn't changed yet to specify...another site states that the greens are being phased out by 2011. None of the ordering sites seem to know EXACTLY what the regs are for the new Blues... I don't wanna spend the money on the greens just to have to purchase the Blues in a couple of years... Any suggestions, info, knowledge??

Thanks

Someone else will probably be able to better answer your questions than I, but it is my understanding that a Gortex will be issued to you at FSH.

GOOD LUCK TO YOU!

Hello jbrecon2:

I would suggest you bring at least 3-4 ACUs with you along with seven pair undies (shirt/pants) seven pair of OD socks, your APFT shorts and the long shirts/pants (with appropriate white socks) your boots and some civilian clothing

Since you are going during the end of the summer I would dare say you probably don't need any warmer stuff with you - unless you are going to OBC during winter months: the mornings in San Antonio can be chilly (I went to OBC during December)

You will also be going to the CIF (central issuing facility) during your first few days at OBC and any equipment that you will be using while at Camp Bullis will be issued to you then. Keep all your hand receipts! Or else you will be owing $$ to Uncle Sam (smile) My last bit of advice: Know the serial number of your weapon. NEVER LEAVE YOUR WEAPON. YOU will sleep with your weapon. You WILL TAKE your weapon with you, even to the latrine.

Have fun. You will learn so much you will wonder how in the world you will ever process so much information, much less pass all the exams. Hook up and listen to those with prior service.

Best of luck,

thanks athena, i am a prior service infantry scout with two deployments so i pretty much have the weapon stuff down :-) in fact, i think i know the serial numbers of every weapon i ever had!! i was just curious about some of the other stuff.....will i get time off to explore? what do they do during inprocessing....any more medical stuff? i've had enough of that for a lifetime. i'm actually driving down, and making it into a little adventure.

Hello all,

Looks like there's some good info in these posts, but if I may through in a few questions...

How does the promotional process work? What does it take to go from 2Lt->1LT->Cpt->etc.?

Is it difficult to transition form Reservist to Active Duty? As a Reservist, will/when I be able to use the GI Bill to pay for my BSN (currently ADN)?

Thanks

Welcome! There are others who will be able to answer your questions better than I, but Officer promotion is "competitive." You are given OER's (performance reviews) which go in your file... selection boards then select officers for promotion based on years in service, time in grade, and individual performance. that being said, promotion from 2LT to 1LT to CPT are pretty much a given, assuming you do not screw up big time. I think the average time between each of those promotions is about 18 months right now. last I heard time in grade (as a CPT) for promotion to MAJ was about 6 years... but promotions to Field Grade Officer are much more competitive.

Hope that helps some,

Hi there. Well, you know all about in-processing the old "hurry up and wait" routine. When you in-process at Fort Sam that first full day will be spent assigning you to your platoon, weighing and, if needed, the dreaded taping! You will also be given the majority of your reading materials and the usual lectures/talks from the major players there: the instructors.

I know when I went through OBC we were in the classroom Sunday through Monday. But remember I was in the Reserves then, so y'all that are AC will have more time spent in the classroom and in the field. So perhaps you will have the weekends off? Maybe someone else can advise you on what to expect from their most recent experiences.

My goodness it is almost time for OBLC! Have fun!
