I have read all the threads on this forum and have asked around other forums looking for anyone in the Army Reserve Nurse Corp.

When I get my ADN next May I am thinking about enlisting and would like to hear experiences of people who have joined recently. How long was the training at Ft Sam and what was it like? How were things on the weekends you worked. Deployments?

While I am not in the Army Reserves Nurse Corp, I decided to get a commission in the Air Force Reserve as a critical care nurse, I did do research on the Army vs the Air Force and just wanted to let you know that you do not enlist into the Nurse Corps but receive a commission as an officer. You would more than likely come in as a 2nd Lieutenant. You would be required to go to OBC which for health professionals is a 2 week course. http://www.cs.amedd.army.mil/obc/

Hope this helps you out.

Thanks for the reply.

I have pretty much absorbed all the info the Army has put out there on the subject on the net. Really more looking for the input of someone who has been through it or is in now.

I was enlisted for 5 years before receiving a direct commission in the Army Reserve Nurses Corp. I am leaving for OBC on May 27th. Will let you know how it goes when I get back!!

anyone been to obc recently....how was it what can I expect honestly...How to prepare? B

I was stationed at Ft. Sam twice in the 80s. Loved it. Out all of the places I have lived in the world, i consider that at the top of my list. Beautiful city! I just loved the River walk, especially during Christmas. The Alamo, was a little dissappointing. I first saw it when I was kid, coming back from Panama. Alot smaller than what they portray in the movies. Of course, alot of it is gone. It is more a gift shop now. I look forward to going back to San Antonio in about a year or so. You will here people say that they love it or hate it. Remember, alot of it is, how and what you make of the military. Some things you can change and some things you can't. Take advantage of everything the military has to offer, if you feel that is what you want.

Specializes in once again it comes back to haunt me..Ps.

I would recommend the Navy not Army. just mt personal preference

Fort Sam was great but I was in last 2 week program. I think new OBC course is 4 weeks. Instructors were great, We learned how to do land navigation, handling weapons, and army procedures. Other officers were very helpful.

Good luck.

Hello All,

I have been reading up on everything I can find on this site from all of you Army Officers, Nurse Corps, OBLC grads & the Like...First.. Congrats to ALL OF YOU!!!!!

I am an ASN, currently processing all of the flaming paperwork hoops for my own Direct Commission into the Army through AMEDD. I will be reserve for 1 or 2 years while I complete my BSN @ which point I am then going Active.

I have a Couple of questions for all of you who are a few steps ahead of me, Thus more experienced!!

1. Direct Commissioning: (The Ceremony) WHAT IS THE UNIFORM FOR THAT?.... Do I need to purchase the Class A's for this? I'm confused, because I read that several of you had not had the Class A's for even OBLC.

2. I have read on here as well that the Reserve Component of OBLC is changing in regards to the schedule. I am not Able to locate the 2008 Sched. for OBLC. The Transformation power point..is a bit confusing for me...especially with never being there before, and not understanding all the numbers and acronyms.

Can any of you offer any assistance?? Thank you in advance!!

Regarding the direct commission I "oathed" in civilians however...Class A's are the uniform. I've heard this from several people and had I known ahead of time I would've had the A's. I sent my commissioning pic to a friend who is in the Army and the only comment back was, "where was your uniform!?"

Meanwhile all of us nurses in the last OBLC course were told that we did need to have our Class A's by the time we reported to our Post of assignment. My A's are being completed now.

While the Army may be converting over to the new Army Service Uniform it hasn't happened yet and the Nursing corps currently requires us to have our Class A's pronto because without it we are unable to properly dress to attend any formal functions, (such as funerals or what not). I didn't need them in OBLC or for the OBLC graduation but, here you go with what we were told.
