Got To Be A Nurse!

Published

Hello..

Im a first-timer here.. and instantly told myself "THANK GOD I FOUND THIS SITE." i have already read many many informative threads and they made me think about being a "true" nurse.

However, I need some help.

I am currently a undergraduate student in Stony Brook University in NY, and just finished all the pre-req courses to apply, but with low GPA. Science grades with Bs and Cs, and they are really frustrating. In such competitive field, i feel very underachieved. But what i really want to pursue is being a Nurse. I've always wanted to, and won't change.

How can I overcome this situation? I am going into CNA program that starts next week(the only thing i think its good b/c professor told me it would look good on the application!).Though with low confidence, i will apply to many schools around New York and Jersey area. What I need is the list of schools that i might have some possibilities of getting accepted.

And if any of you out there can give any kind of advice, please, PLEASE SHARE with ME!

welcome aboard mate!

You might get replies in the regional section since people on that board may be more familiar with schools in the area you're looking in.

Good luck and if it's really your dream you'll find someway to make it happen.

You have to get better grades thats the only way. Figure out what happened in these courses that prevented you from getting that A. Did you not study enough? Did you not study correctly? Can you take more advantage of online resources, the library, or free tutoring on campus? Pester your professor with every question that comes into your mind. Thats his/her job, never feel guilty. Do what needs to be done (legally) to get that A.

I don't know how much this may or may not help you, but community colleges like ECC and NCCC offer RN-ADN programs. I am going to go in to NCCC's in the fall of 09 and you only need a 2.0 to be accepted. If you cannot get into the program at Stony Brook you may want to check out other options such as an ADN program. Having said that, when I went to change my cirriculum at NCCC the counselor said that fall 09 would fill-up quickly so I would spend a few minutes this summer checking out the community colleges near you and ask questions to their admission departments. My feeling is that the community colleges will become harder to get in to once people realize that ADN/BSN doesn't make a whole big difference if you are a new grad and only want to be a nurse (not go in to teaching or administration) so more people will begin opting for the ADN just so they can begin their career therefore, making the community colleges much more competitive than they are now, KWIM?

Don't know how much help this is, but here's the schools I applied to. They're all ADN programs. Good luck!

definitely, you need to repeat those classes that you made C's in. I dont know how hard nursing school is to get into but in Texas you have to have at least a 3.0 in you nursing pre-req ( which are all natural science courses.) Try and repeat those classes so you can have As in them and beat out all the other applicants that are just determined as you! You can always take the classes at a community college, its cheaper for classes so you wont feel so bad about repeating them; but then again EVERYONE has repeated classes! I think the CNA thing is good, it will look good on your application and you will have great experience in the nursing field.

Im here, whatever you decide to do. Good Luck!

It's been said before but it's true. You need to re-take the science classes and get at the very least 3.7's (since it will be the second time you are taking the same classes you should do better than B's) in them. If you really really want to be a nurse then putting in the extra work to make your app competitive is worth the effort. I know many ppl in my area (west coast) who are on their 2nd or 3rd rejection. If they would re-take the sciences and score better they would get accepted. I've been told that it's pretty hard to swallow the lump in your throat when you see the "we regret to inform you" line in the letter you have been waiting so long to get.

Most (if not all) nursing programs across the country are extremely competitive. There are innumberable threads on "will I get in with my low grades" (or something to that effect) here and the answer is always an overwhelming "probably not". The advice is always to re-take the classes and get better grades. So if you really want to get in on your first try and not waste time waiting around hoping your low grades will look better next time then retake the science classes, get A's and you'll be a shoe in!

Sorry if that sounded kind of harsh I did not mean it to be I was just trying to be honest. In any case good luck however you decide to continue.
