Hello all - this is my first post [emoji4]. I am graduating July 23rd (BSN) and I've accepted a position in the neurosurgery department with VCU Health System. I'm super excited and I was hoping to meet some other nurses there.

Congratulations on getting your new job RVARN2B. I am in the process of applying for the OR intern program as I am graduating in July as well. I would be relocating from Hampton Roads if i get the position but would love the opportunity to work/live in the Richmond area. I was hoping that you could give me an idea of how the process went for you and any tips you may have. Also, if you don't mind, what is the starting rate for a new grad entering the residency program? I know down in this area of VA it is roughly $21.10 with additional for shift differential. Thanks again!
HI StudentRn2016!!
I'm so glad to meet you!! Congratulations on applying to the OR intern program! I am relocating from Hampton Roads too! (Suffolk). I've taken a place in Mechanicsville, moving in in about 2 weeks, my first day is August 1st! The process was fairly quick for me....I applied online on a Friday and HR called me the following Monday or Tuesday. We set up an interview for that Thursday. I then submitted my references and HR called me I think the following Wednesday or Thursday and offered me the position! So all in all it took about a week and a half. I will be in the neuroscience department, it may be different for the OR intern program. As far as tips go, the managers i interviewed with were really nice and easy going. They asked things like "tell us about a time where you had conflict with a co worker and how did you resolve it?" "tell us about a time when you had to advocate for a client?" They will probably ask you if you're planning to relocate too. I was told to come to the interview in scrubs because they actually put you on the floor that day with a nurse so you can see if its a good fit for you. As far as salary goes I was offered $23.85 before shift diffs, which may reflect the fact that I have been an LPN since 2009. HR called me back to verify my LPN employment, which makes me think they may have taken this into consideration. The shift diffs are nice though - at the highest I would make about $31.85 - which I'm satisfied with for a new grad. I hope this info helps and CONGRATULATIONS again. Keep in touch!

Will you be participating in the new grad residency there since you have worked as an LPN?
Hi NurseKateC! Yes I will be doing the residency - that was one of the things I was looking for in a first job - a good residency program [emoji6]
That's really great! I was wondering if many hospitals would offer that to new grad RNs that have LPN experience. My husband and I are hoping to move to Richmond when I graduate from my lpn to rn program and VCU is a hospital I have looked into.

I think all new grads are required to do nurse residency - sometimes even if they've been at another job less than a year! We had an NP who came back to the bedside required to do residency because she never did bedside. We are one of few accredited residencies. You get a lot out of it!
