Southern Cali pay - relocation from east coast
Hi everyone, I have been looking into relocating from Richmond VA to Southern California for a few months now, but have yet to find a quoted pay bracket. I'm hoping someone on here can help. Im a clinical nurse II with almost 2 years of experience on a very busy internal medicine unit with general and step down patients, in a very large, urban Magnet designated teaching hospital that has consistently been ranked as the top in the state. I have completed a new grad residency program that is accredited here, and the project myself and another one from my cohort did is now being implemented hospital wide. I will be PCCN and CMSRN certified upon relocation. I am a preceptor for new grad nurses and senior capstone nursing students, as well as adult med/surg nursing clinicals. My unit is a gold beacon unit and one of 10 certified adult cystic fibrosis care units in the US. We also pilot all new medicine research implementations and projects before they become hospital wide, such as SIBR (structured interdisciplinary bedside rounding - includes nursing, MDs, pharmacy, and SW). Based on this, what round about can I expect to get paid? I'm trying to figure out if I will be able to afford actually living out there. The cost of living is 257% higher in CA than where I live. I'm hoping for another teaching hospital such as UCLA, or Cedars Senai, all the way down to San Diego. Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Got a job with VCU Health!! Anyone else work there???
I think all new grads are required to do nurse residency - sometimes even if they've been at another job less than a year! We had an NP who came back to the bedside required to do residency because she never did bedside. We are one of few accredited residencies. You get a lot out of it!

How is the Virginia job market for nurses?
At VCU they will hire ADN on the promise that you'll obtain your BSN (on VCU). I think we maintain 70 or 80% BSN?

VCU ABSN Summer 2017 Hopefuls
Hey vcu17. You sound like a great asset to the program. Retaking a class yielding a better grade is a good idea and shows determination. I don't think that would be a make it or break it deal though. My SATs were 1090 (on old scale of 1600) and GRE was 800 (took it for a completely different program). I don't think those are weighted as heavily the longer you're out of high school. ASBN is not graduate school so GRE isn't necessary. Good luck with the process. I think you're a strong candidate. I loved VCU ABSN and work at VCU Health now.

Relocating to VA
It really depends on your own personal opinion... The highest price is 96$/month and comes out of your paycheck.. But there's also much cheaper lots/decks and a free one where busses run constantly in loops. Even though it can be frustrating to pay, I wouldn't leave VCU over it.

I think PICU at vcu is hiring. You do pay for parking depending on where you want to park (and what's available). They make a killing in parking, but finding parking otherwise is near impossible. I love VCU though.

VCU ABSN Summer 2016
My GREs were 800 and my SATs 1090 (from a scale 11 years ago, out of 1600) - they said if you didn't take GREs they'd look at SATs. Not sure if they even look at either but both of mine were abysmal lol

Projected back to work date?
In case anyone was wondering, I was out 5 long boring weeks! Couldn't go back until I was cleared from any restrictions.

VCU ABSN Summer 2016
Hi! It was the beginning of April I was pulled from the wait list. Yes you can buy hunter green scrubs and get them embroidered yourself. My experience with VCU school of nursing was incredible. Honestly, I don't think I would have gotten such amazing experiences anywhere else in the state. Is it hard? Absolutely. Is it impossible? No. Will you question yourself as to why you're putting yourself through such a difficult program? Yes. Is it worth it? ABSOLUTELY! Professors are very helpful. They don't want you to fail. The first 2 semesters are packed- but the last 3 semesters I was able to work 2 part time jobs. I met the most amazing people through VCU nursing. Competition depends on your cohort. My cohort was not competitive with each other, everyone was very supportive. We knew we were all in it together. I met some friends I'll have for life. I hope this helps.
