  1. I am interested in traveling as well and my specialty is the OR. I was a scrub tech for 5 years and look to begin traveling after about a 1.5 years in my nursing role, so roughly 4 months from now. How long have you been working in the OR. I would love to hear about your experience in finding a company and transitioning to your first assignment. Good luck and keep us updated.
  2. Does anyone know about Penn State Hershey salaries? I am applying to there nurse residency program as a new graduate but I will be moving from Virginia. Just curious to see how it stacks up against Lehigh Valley since that is the other hospital system I was looking at as well. Thanks everyone!
  3. Congratulations on getting your new job RVARN2B. I am in the process of applying for the OR intern program as I am graduating in July as well. I would be relocating from Hampton Roads if i get the position but would love the opportunity to work/live in the Richmond area. I was hoping that you could give me an idea of how the process went for you and any tips you may have. Also, if you don't mind, what is the starting rate for a new grad entering the residency program? I know down in this area of VA it is roughly $21.10 with additional for shift differential. Thanks again!
  4. Hope the process goes smoothly for you all. I plan on beginning this process once I graduate my BSN program this summer. Penn State Hershey is one of my top choices. Did you secure a position yet kmend11? I would appreciate any guidance that you can offer from your experience. Good luck with everything!
  5. I am also looking to join either the army or Air Force. I finish my BSN in 7 months and have a job lined up in the OR as I am a scrub tech currently. What made you join the reserves verses active duty? Do you know if you can go active duty if you initially sign up for the reserves? Or do you have to wait until your commitment is fulfilled? How does army OR nursing compare to your civilian OR nursing career? Also, do you have you CORN? Thanks for your comments and thank you for your service to the country.
  6. I am a student nurse graduating in August with my BSN. I have been a scrub tech now for 5 years and plan on making the transition in the RN role upon graduation. My plan is to work in the OR for 2 years and then sit for my CNOR. At about the 1 1/2 year mark I would like to apply to the Air Force to serve as an OR nurse. Now this is my plan and probably not how it will actually work out with regards to the timeline but it is always good to have an initial plan. I have been drawn to the military since I began my journey to become a RN. When you say you get called back in, is it similar to that of the civilian hospital when we get called back in with regards to pay? I always thought that your pay was your pay in the military if you worked 40 hours or 60 hours. Also, how often are you getting deployed? What type responsibilities does the OR nurse have in the military as they move up in rank? I appreciate the post and look forward to someday serving my country.
  7. Did you get the position at VCU? If so, what unit? How was the process? I was hoping to apply there possibly when I graduate in the spring so I was curious about how new grads like it at VCU. Thanks and good luck!
  8. I finish my BSN in August and was planning on working in the OR. Do you think I would be better suited to get my CORN accreditation before making the move for the Army? It will take two years before I can sit for the exam for CORN but I thought the two years experience and specialty accreditation would make me a more attractive applicant rather than being a new grad. Thoughts ...
  9. how is the job hunt going in hampton roads? what is the graduate nursing situation like (i.e. residency programs vs normal orientation)? Thank you
  10. I think you can make the jump. If you have the right attitude and show genuine interest in learning about the OR environment, you should be able to make the transition. Go for it!!
  11. So I am currently a surgical tech and will also be finishing with my BSN in August '16. Do you think that it is smart to keep my certification for surgical tech to improve chances of getting RN job in OR after graduation? I plan on moving out of the are I currently work in so I am thinking that it would look better on my resume if I stay certified, maybe even get compensated for my 5 years experience at a level one trauma center. What do you think?
  12. Any luck getting in at Abington?? I am looking to move to the area and was curious about the process at that hospital (i.e. residency program or just straight orientation onto a unit) for new grads. Thanks!
  13. Did you apply through any residency programs? Do you have any previous experience? Hope you start to hear back soon. I graduate in the summer with my BSN and will look to apply in those areas also. I currently live in VA but will relocate to that area to be closer to family.
  14. Just looking through old posts and came across this one. How was the transition to Central PA? I plan on moving to this area upon completion of my BSN. I am originally from this area and look forward to getting back there. Where did you end up working? I was looking at P.S. Hershey because of their nursing residency program for graduate nurses. I was curious as to what the salary was up there. Where I am currently located, graduate nurses start at $21.05 with some compensation for experience depending on the department you work in (i.e. an LPN with med surg experience, surgical tech with OR experience). Thanks for your help and congratulations!
  15. Just looking through old posts and came across this one. I am graduating from an out of state BSN program next spring. I am originally from eastern PA and I hope to relocate to central PA for the Hershey Medical Center Nursing Residency Program. Have you ever worked at that campus? I currently work in the OR as a surgical tech while I am in school and hope to transition to a nurse in the OR. What is the salary for a graduate nurse in that area? Is your facility associated with the university? If so, do they support their nurses when it comes to continuing their education (tuition assistance, etc.)? I appreciate your help and thanks again!
