Got accepted into Galen-Tampa

Published

Hey everyone, I just got accepted into galen nursing school in tampa-st.pete area.

Would LOVE to hear from current students about their experience and things I should know.

I live in the new tampa area, will be commuting, and working part-time, and am going for my RN, havent done LPN yet.:)

My cousin is at Galen (Tampa) in his 2nd quarter of LPN. I can tell you this, his class started with 60 students and is now down to 29 or 30 I believe. I was there today for an information session and the lobby was filled with crying students who had just learned that they had failed their 2nd qtr finals, meaning they were done. The admin took their id badges and access cards and told them to leave! (Much to the horror of the other prospective students in the waiting area). I can tell you this from his experience..STUDY STUDY STUDY! And when you think you've got it down, STUDY it again. My cousins biggest complaint is that the tests are worded to confuse you, and that you must never forget that you ARE a number here. Yet, despite these complaints, I still wanted to see what the school could offer. I was shocked to have more than one student walk by me and say "Don't come here". Now I feel like I'm back to square one again.. I hope you have a better experience...Maybe I just came in on a bad day but after hearing all of my cousins stories of insanely difficult exams, vindictive and arrogant instructors, problems getting clinical sites organized, I'm thinking I would be better off spending my money elsewhere......

Wow, thank you so much for your reply. I was there today for my appointment for financial aid and was in the waiting room with all those students who were crying and such...horrible sight to see broke my heart...I cannot imagine being in their shoes ever. I have already made a commitment there and have to stick to it and will try my BEST to not fail...all the other colleges have a long wiaitng period and way too much competition thats why I am taking my chance with them. Wish you the best too though.

I was one of the "cryers" lol! It was very horrible & unfair what they did to us. And we were "dismissed" from campus & had to forfeit our badges. We were all HALF way done. 6 months and $9K later. We were ALL GREAT nurses too. It was the politics! Our Maternity/ Infant Final was effin ridiculous!!! I hope those that choose to go there do well. We can't even be considered to re-enroll until we write a letter stating "why we feel we got a 69.9 in the class" and we were all told there might not be room for another 6 months. JOKE! BIG JOKE!

Let me know if you are looking for 1st quarter books. I have Fundamentals Vol I & II, Essentials of Anatomy & Physiology, Taber's Cyclopedic Med Dictionary and The Nursing Care Plan Book. :)

Tips for making it at Galen - STUDY!!! Then STUDY more...

no one is going to hold your hand, your instructors will meet with you - give you study tips, let you know if you are borderline failing... however if you read, show up to class, pay attention, let go of the drama, focus, study and make this your ultimate goal you will do great.

Galen has some great teachers, great staff. lots of resources.. use them!!! spend time in the library.. form study groups. This is not nursing school for sissies. Plan on reading 2 hours a night, most likely 12 hours on the weekends. Outline every chapter, use colored pens, attend the care plan workshops.. they are there for YOU! I am a student that is repeating funds - I know why... I am determined.. and although I have already been thru 6-8 weeks of this class and helped my fellow class mates with CPE finals.. you can bet while I am on break I have already started reading and outlining my chapters... Also, 2 books suggested for qtr 2 I recommend getting now - saunders nclex and a nursing care plan book....

I just ordered my books online and am renting them, really cant afford the prices for the books with my going to school five days a week and being unable to work. I am so sorry that they took your badges and that you couldnt move on after 69.9 thats just heartbreaking esp after being six months in. But, please dont give up.

I just want to know that theres hope out therre and that I can succeed and make it through in one shot and not have to repeat, I simply cant afford to repeat. I am taking out loans and commuting from new tampa area. I highly do appreciate your recommendations about the books and tips.

Specializes in Home Care.

I graduated with honors from Galen's LPN day program. Everyone in my class passed the board exam the first time.

Yeah its tough and nobody is going to hold your hand through the classes and clinicals.

Do all the reading assignments, study your notes and practice test questions from the Saunder's NCLEX book.

Good luck!

Well week one is almost over now. I think I made a good decision coming here at this point. Time will tell, but I do feel like I'll be better prepared coming out of here. I just try and not think of the money I'm spending..yikes!!

I'm glad you feel that way. Which block are you in? You might be in my class... I like Ms.Ritchey she is nice, she is trying really hard - you can tell shes nervous but she will find her spot... I like her teaching style and the handout (slides) she gives are helpful too. Just make sure you also read your Fundamentals book and do the knowledge checks.. I guarantee you they will be on the test.

How did you like lab? It's fun, isn't it? and Mr. Nutting - he is a good guy - he drove me insane with his reading, but I like him. his teaching style and Ms. Ritchey is waaaaayyyy different. Anyways, glad you like it - let me know which block you are in.. :)
