Goodwin College???

Published

Hello Everyone!

Im looking through all my options for nursing school. After a recent meeting and extensive Research I feel like Goodwin College might be the best option for me. I'm looking to get the opinions and views from students who attended the school, I see mixed reviews from many years ago but I know the program was new at that time. Can anyone offer a review with a recent experience in the program?

Also, I'm looking to get feedback on the career potential of a Goodwin graduate? How does the working world view Goodwin graduates? I will be continuing on to my BSN, and will likely do that at Goodwin as well. I'd really love to know from an employers perspective or someone with experience, how are Goodwin graduates viewed?

Any help, opinions and feedback would be appreciated! Thanks!

Thanks everyone! I did decide to start at Goodwin. I'm finishing some pre reqs now. Would you mind sharing how many points you got in with if you did get in?

I had 91 and heard that they accepted applicants as low as 89.

The points system changed a few years ago. I believe the most you can get is 25. I had 20 when I got in. The cutoff is usually 19.

All I know is that they are CONSTANTLY advertising. Their marketing budget must be huge. Constantly hearing ads on TV and radio and seeing billboards everywhere, and they always say they NEVER STOP ACCEPTING applications, lol.

Their nursing program starts classes 3 times a year and they have the largest nursing school in CT. Goodwin is flush with cash. They have a beautiful, almost brand new riverfront building (with padded seats....thank you!) and are growing quickly...they are buying the surrounding homes around them for 125% of market price and will be expanding. I bet they will become a university in the near future. They are very business savvy and new create programs in fields that are in demand or about to flourish. Most importantly, I can say having gone there they have great teachers and great clinical instructors in their nursing program.

I just graduated in December 2015.

First: to get in you historically need 19 or more points on the point system (found on their website). Sometimes you can get in with an 18. I don't know anyone, in the past 3 years, that has been accepted with below an 18.

Second: to get 18 or more points you will need to take some pre-req classes at goodwin. I believe up to 7, for max points.

Third: they say many start with no money out of pocket. I just finished my Adn with $45,000 in student loans. This doesn't take into the $8-10k I paid out of pocket. I received very little help from the school, and only took the 7 classes for points and the nursing classes. The rest of my credits were transferred from uconn.

Fourth: there will be no issues getting day/night classes. Clinicals are trickier. It is a lotto system. If you get a low number, you better have made deals to switch with other people or have a very open schedule. Clinicals are available 6-7 days a week, days and nights, so there are usually tons of viable options, on paper.

Fifth: I couldn't be happier with the professors and clinical instructors. There is little straight lecture and a lot of active learning.

Sixth: goodwin has an excellent reputation with the hiring managers at local hospitals and facilities. There is assistance finding a job, an entire dept called "career services". I'm really not sure why the above poster said there wasn't. Many of my class had jobs before graduation.

Seventh: so far, my class is 7 for 7 for passing the NCLEX. We have 50 people scheduled to take it, with this being the first week. Most are taking the first 2 weeks of feb. I will update when I know more.

I can't say enough about goodwin. It is expensive, but I think it has made me a very well rounded candidate for any nursing path I choose, so the cost is minor compared to the experience for me.
