Hey everyone:
I'm starting my practicum hours (500 hrs) in ortho and was wondering what's a good ortho nursing book. Any recommendations? I've looked on Amazon bu there's all sorts of stuff and wanted to have a good reference book to start reading during my hours.

What are the current textbooks used for Orthopedic Nursing?
Are there any Orthopedic Nursing Handbooks you can suggest?
Thanks!
In my research I found that NAON is releasing an
Introduction to Orthopedic Nursing 4th edition book. It should be
released by Aug 31 2010
Here is the description---
This 2010 resource provides a valuable overview of basic musculoskeletal anatomy, common adult orthopaedic conditions, and appropriate nursing assessment and care. Earn 12.4 contact hours by reviewing the text and taking online chapter post tests.

jahra you must have gotten the same email I did. This sounds like an ideal book, but the price is kind of high $65 for members and $80 for non members.
Thanks for the reply P_RN,I did spring for the book after searching high and low for a book.
The only other option I saw was the NAON Core curriculum book which was $150 and way out of my budget.
When I receive it I'll let you know what the table of contents is, and if it is a good
investment.
Sorry for a late reply. I received and reviewed the Introduction to Orthopaedic Nursing .
It is a soft cover and spiral bound.
The table of contents include--
Chapter 1 Musculoskeletal Anatomy/Neurovascular Assessment
Care of the patient with:
Chapter 2 Upper Extremity Problems
Chapter 3 Spine Problems
Chapter 4 Knee Problems
Chapter 5 Hip/Foot/Ankle problems
Chapter 6 Traumatic Orthopaedic injuries
Chapter 7 Pain Management
Chapter 8 Complications associated with Orthopaedic Conditions/surgery
Chapter 9 Body Mechanics/Mobility Techniques/Post surgical precautions
Excellent content. Overpriced at $ 80 from my point of view since the ceu exams you need to
purchase separately at around the same price. There is a discount for NAON members for the book.
It is a good addition to my nursing book collection, the authors are quite detailed in each chapter.
I also ordered the Manual of Orthopaedics from Lippincott. It is a pocket book for house staff,
but the Intro book above is a good compliment with it.
I am still looking for a current Nursing text specific to Orthopaedics.
If you have any suggestions in 2011, would appreciate it!

Jahra,
Sorry I could not respond to you personally - I don't know why but I wasn't able to! I was a Certified Ortho Nurse until about 7 years ago when I changed jobs and stopped recertification procedures. Stupid thing to do. I worked for an Ortho Surgeon for 20 years, in the office and in the OR and loved it! Best job I ever had. Prior to that I did a lot of ortho on the nursing units. I guess I look "sturdy" because I always got sent there, even though I basically hated it on the units! I loved the surgical part of it, and the office part when I was putting on and taking off casts.
The NAON book you mentioned is probably perfect. I had one from them years ago and it was great. They are the experts in our field after all! Good luck.
Hi Orthonurse55,
Thank you so much for the reply. It may be that you need to have a certain amount of
posts before you can pm.
Since it does not look like there are other options, I will order the Core Curriculum book(NAON)
in a few weeks.
Appreciate your post! Sounds like you had my dream job.:) When I moved home years ago,
I changed specialties and unfortunately never made it back to ortho.
What a wonderful career you had, a nice blend between the OR and the office.
It is a career where you make a difference. My intro to ortho was years ago at age 10
when I broke my arm roller skating. The nurse and the Dr. were great, and my high anxiety
level was soon set aside by their calm, confident manner. I gave them both a big hug
when weeks later they removed the cast. Never went near a pair of roller skates again.
I'd search high and low for the Core Curriculum. It is THE book to study. It is in the form of an outline (remember English 101?) its a paperback and worth its weight in gold. There are used ones about so search.
