Good ER reference book for new ER nurse??

Hi, I will start working in a level 4 ER in about 2 weeks (I just graduated w/ my BSN this past May) and the nurse educator at my hospital suggested I buy Sheehy's Emergency Nursing Principles and Practices book, 5th Ed. - the last publication date was 2002.

The reviews on Amazon were lukewarm at best, and I'd like a reference book (be it this book or another one) that will really help me become more familiar with the ER setting and whatnot.

I am wondering if any other ER nurses out there can recommend a new or better book for the ER??

I think the reason why the Nurse Educator recommended Sheehy's is because it corresponds to the Emergency Nurses Association Orientation Course (see the

If this the case, then it would be in your best interest to buy the book. Check out ebay to see if you can get it cheaper.

Now, for better books than Sheehy's, take a look at the ENA http://www.ena.org/store/index2.asp

Emergency Nursing Core Curriculum & the Critical Thinking books are good.

ENA is a really good resource and if you join them for $100/yr you get a pretty good journal as well. They had a lot of books listed last time I checked.

Another good resource in your pocket that I always recommend new hires buy is the pocket guide to critical care and emergency nursing listed here:

Another one besides Sheehy's (which I do think is probably the best still) is Emergency Nursing Made Incredibly Easy...is a good start but not as comprehensive as some others.

:nurse: what, if anything, is the difference between the 2 sheehy books out there:

sheehy's emergency nursing principals and practice, 5th ed.

and

sheehy's manual of emergency care, 6th ed.

which is better for a new grad nurse entering the er??

Anyone familiar with Porter's Pocket Guide to Emergency & Critical Care? Good, bad or whatnot? It's available electronically.

If you are Pal/Pocket PC savy....download the trial version of PEPID at Pepid.com. It's the emergency nursing reference manual. In my mind better than the paper version as it instantly updates every time you sync to your PC

Are you talking about the Pepid RN package or a specific ED package? I was out at pepid.com but couldn't find any emergency nursing software.

Go to PEPID.com and download the Pepid RN. Be warned that Pepid ALSO has a MED/SURG, Oncology, EMS version as well. I believe its a 30 day free trial. I've had it for a number of years now and LOVE it. Also check out EPOCRATES at Epocrates.com. It's your drug guide, has an additional free trial version and updates automatically. (Check with your drug reps. One of ours recently gave me a certificate for a free year!)

Another good place to look for books is half.com It is run by ebay but you don't bid, just buy outright. They have all kinds of books from paperback novels to text books, new or used. I got my husband a 150.00 book for 25.00 and it was like new.....

Personally, I like ER Suite for my PDA which has several types of calculators (Parkland formula, conversions, dosage calcs for RSI meds, pedi-dosing).

However, I use the ENA site as well - it is a great resource. I also have Sheehy's - its the ER RNs bible.

The PEPID suite was originally created to be an ER companion. I have had Skyscape's Nursing Central for over a year and thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. My subscription just expired so I thought I'd try PEPID RN suite to see the differences. I LOVE PEPID. My trial has expired but I can still access the content (I just don't get updates when I sync my Palm). Try the free PEPID trial- you won't be disappointed. The database (accessed by clicking the far right link in the program that looks like a house with an "i" for info in it) is so comprehensive. It's amazing. Blows my Nursing Central with Taber's and Davis in it right out of the water.:p
