What is a good chemistry book to supplement a course in general college chemistry? Preferably one with many exercises and lots of step by step explanations of methods.

I have not tried it personally, but I hear Chemistry For Dummies is a great resource. I believe there is a workbook that accompanies the text, too.

Check this one 3000 solved problems in Chemistry But the book contains only exercises.
I looked inside and the book looks very helpful.
I believe it will help me a lot! I ordered it one week ago and still waiting for the package.

People here on Allnurses recommended the Cliffs Notes Study Solver for Chemistry book and I loved it. I really recommend it too.
Heres the link:

Also, this Chemistry website is full of great tutorials and TONS of practice sheets. I really credit it with helping me to get an A in my Chem. 101 class. Practice makes perfect you know. Just be aware that there can be a few errors on some of the practice sheets.

I've taken the year long gen chem and organic chem (and now I'm taking the year long biochem) series. I hated chemistry and never thought I'd survive three years of it but I've actually come to enjoy it.
I recommend for gen chem Klein's Chemistry as a Second Language book: http://www.amazon.com/General-Chemistry-Second-Language-Fundamental/dp/0471716626/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1221203475&sr=8-1 if you are taking a general chemistry course, not just an introduction to chemistry or an overview course. I honestly don't think you will find a better series of books to supplement your textbooks than Klein's series.
If you are taking an overview course or an intro course only though this might go above and beyond what you need, but I know some pre-nursing students do take the gen chem courses that science majors are required to (they usually aren't required to take the full series though) so I thought I'd throw this one out at you. If you really want to know and master chemistry, give it a try. It teaches you more on how to think and approach the course.

I too used the Cliff Study Solver...Chemistry. It was the best purchase I made! Got an A in the class using that study book.

One of my favorite websites (and everything is FREE to download!) is chemreview.net. It is awesome, and they constantly update it:

One guy who saved my bacon with Lewis Structures is Alan Earhart. He has a bunch of other tutorials, too:

I owe that guy a lot!
thank's everyone.
I got a few books, including the chemistry for dummies book. lol
but I am a bit embarrassed to walk around with the book, it is a bit self degrading title if you know what I mean.. although the book is easy to comprehend on concepts, etc. so that is great and so I am happy with that purchase.
but I was let down when I got the cliff's note study solver book. Afterwards I read some reviews (online on the barnes and nobles website's review of the book) saying that the book had a lot of errors in it, and sure enough, I came across quite a substantial amount of errors in the book so far..
Other than that, the book has really excellent format, which I thought was really great about the book. It is just that it has some errors in it's calculations and methods which was the let down..
Are there more study aid books (containing lots of exercises and explanation of concepts/methods) for college chemistry class that are good?
