Any suggestions on good books to read for a nursing student soon to start clinicals. I am looking for books that would really help me suceed.
A good book on the critical thinking would be great.
I am open to any other suggestions.

I have Fast Facts for Nurses which is nice to look things up in. Mostly tho, I just stick w/ the required reading for school.
I do get a few magazines tho, that have been helpful. I love Nursing 2005, AJN, RN, and Nursing made Easy magazines. Found em at amazon.com. It seems that there is always a helpful article that makes me sit back and have a lightbulb moment. :)

A book on how to write nursing diagnosis would help. Those are really hard to get a handle on. When I used to turn in my care plans they were covered in red ink, it was very discouraging. So I spent some time just writing nursing dx after nursing dx until I got a paper back with no red ink!

i have a book called "Test Success: Test Taking Techniques for beginning Nursing Students" by: Patricia Mary Nugent, Barbara A. Vitale
$28.95
Its a good book. Good techniques. Shows you how the questions are different from the ones you would normally see on an "art" class or something.

How I Survived Nursing School: (And Lived to Tell About It) and How You Can, Too by Darlene, Rn Haskell
Thank you,
I looked through the Saunders book this Saturday while at Barnes and Noble. I was thrilled with how many of the basic non-clincial critical thinking questions I got right. I think all those philosophy classes and history papers I took years ago are finally paying off!
:rotfl:
I will have to go back and look for the books you guys have suggested.

I am sure the school has books it wants you to have, but sometimes the ones they require just dont work. The books we had to have for care plans were just to vague for me during my first year. I struggled with care plans all year. But while at books a million I found one that was very easy to understand. It's a Mosby book called Nursing Care Plan - Nursing diagnosis & intervention - 5th edition. It had all the Nanda diagnosis'es and very clear interventions and rationals to go with it. Also I had some fellow students who got the RN notes, and after using them the first year found they were not that helpfull. But I did check out MED notes and MED/Surg notes and found them both to have lots of helpfull info that will come in handy during clinicals in the Fall. If ypu have somewhere to go and look at them, please do,but if you buy them, try online at amazon, E-bay, or half.com. Hope this helps.
