My two cents of generic advice:
1. Place the most importance on the quality of the program over online/fast/cheap.
2. Shadow local NPs and find out where their employers prefer to hire from.
3. Find a school that secures preceptors or make sure you have a dozen available preceptors from your own networking.
I agree with BostonFNP, but you would know your curcumstances better than anyone else. If you have an option of a program with preceptors in your local area or within driving distance, go for it. If you know how to network or already know potential preceptors, you have more options for you. Check out Olivet Nazarene University. They have an MSN FNP and FNP certificate program. Other options include Bradley U. There are some state universities which may be more budget-friendly. You will also need to find your own preceptors for all of these programs.
Wouldn't going for your MSN and then going for a post-masters certificate be more expensive than just waiting to start a MSN FNP program? You could save up money in the mean time. If it is due to grades, I understand why you may want to get the MSN first. Most online programs are around 20,000 in my area. Mine is more expensive at 30,000 but I like the time frame being 3 years versus 2 years. I feel like the extra year may help me space out clinicals and make it a little bit less stressful.
Also, keep in mind a lot of schools are no longer placing students for preceptorships. It may be a disturbing trend. The local university is not securing preceptors despite new students thinking they did. I see a lot of their students posting for preceptorships.
