Hello everyone,
I am creating this forum so other pre-nursing students can gather and share helpful information regarding the application process, specifically for GWC's Fall 2022 entry. Some information I received by (staff removed name) (GWC counselor) today is that GWC's nursing program will accept the highest science grade regardless of repeats/remediation. I was worried because I took Anatomy, Physiology, and Microbiology all the way back in 2012-2013 when I was first starting college, and I failed a few times ? thankfully, previous failing grades will not impact your eligibility in receiving the highest points in the multi-criteria (just get those A's ?).
Additionally, she informed me that if science grades are older than the recency requirement (e.g. GWC has a 7 year recency), then schools will not consider these past grades (even if you failed, like in my case) in the application process.
This was a HUGE sigh of relief and hopefully it eases anyone else who might be in a similar situation.
p.s. (staff removed name) was referred to me by one of GWC's nursing professors. She did inform me that in the past, GWC used to average the science grades, but this is currently NOT the case (hopefully they don't change anything in the upcoming months).
Best of luck to anyone applying this cycle! ?

@Kenji12345 Thanks for the response! Really hoping to get in with my set of current points!
Another question that I had is which hospitals does GWC use for clinical rotations? 1st - 4th semesters too, if you possibly know.

Fountain Valley Regional, Huntington Beach Hospital, South Coast Global, OC Memorial for 1st semester- at least in my experience.
2nd semester for Maternity Newborn will be Hoag, OC Memorial, and UCI. Med Surg: Los Alamitos, OC Memorial, FVR.
Pediatrics at CHOC. I heard contract with Miller’s Children was put on hold due to Covid.
Hospital assignments can change, so it may end up being different. But these are the main hospitals that are being rotated.

Hello, thank you for this info! I was wondering what is your schedule like? I am from LA and wondering if the commute is going to be worth it ?

@ZottingStudent Exactly what @heartmurmur said for clinicals.
@teee I can only speak for 1st semester, but the first 6 weeks we had 1 day for lab/NEST (simulation with mannequins) for about 6 hours, 1 day of lecture for about 5 hours, and 1 day of Simulated clinicals (think NEST Day 2 with a focus on something we need to learn like Physical Assessments or Medications) for about 7 hours. Also during the first 6 weeks, you'll be doing an online course worth 1 unit - it's not hard - that gives you background understanding like Ethics, patient advocacy, safety measures and why they exist, etc, which have assignments - quizes and discussion posts mostly - during the week.
After those 6 weeks, the online class finishes and your Simulated clinical days stop. You then prepare for clinicals which are on different days for your cohort since you are broken into smaller clinical groups. Regardless of what day you are assigned, it is 1 clinical shift per week and each shift is approximately 12 - 13 hours for first semester. Most of us are in Med Surg, Telemetry, or Med Surg/Telemetry wings.
So in short, you are in class 3 days for about 5 - 7 hours, and an online course for the first 6 weeks. It then switches to 2 days on campus and 1 day at clinical for nearly the rest of the semester.
Does that help?

Kenji,
That is sooooo much help! I appreciate it SO MUCH! Thank you for such a detailed response! How do you like the program so far? And do you know anyone from your cohort that may commute from LA or further?

No problem, if you need more specifics let me know. I won't lie to you, it is not smooth sailing and I feel a bit (read A LOT) out of my depth sometimes. That said, every single one of us, regardless of who got in or not, have worked too hard to not enjoy it. It is a demanding program and not everything is perfect, but name a program that isn't? Yes it is stressful, yes it is hard, yes I need to drink less caffeine, but I wouldn't trade it for anything.
I am very thankful for the opportunity GWC gave me, and I adore everyone in my cohort. Best bit: I've only been at it for about 8 weeks ?.
I know a few in my cohort commute from Long Beach, not sure if anyone is out in LA. I do know a few moved from other parts of CA and found a place within nearish range to GWC, but that is about it.

YOU ARE AWESOME! As much as you adore everyone in your cohort, they are as lucky to have you. I’ve read past forums and your replies and how much you care about this program doesn’t go unnoticed. Very thankful to have someone who’s in the program now to be able to explain and give some insights. So again, thank you so much! And all that hard work is going to be worth it! You’re going to be an amazing nurse ♥️
@teee I know two that commute from LAX area. They do complain about the commute. One usually just stays on campus after class to avoid traffic and use that time in the LRC to study or practice skills during practice NEST hours (which are very limited).
Whether it’s worth it to you would depend on factors that matter to you. If I were in your position, I would probably pick a closer college if possible because I do value my time and I don’t want to be on the freeway for that long. I think commuting from Long Beach is far enough.
For my classmates, GWC was where they got in so obviously for them it’s worth it to start right away. If it were me, I’d deal with the commute if this was my only option.
You’d be commuting 3 days a week, and you may drive as far as UCI one day a week. But overall, I think it’s doable. Keep in mind you do not get to pick your clinical site as it is a random assignment.

"You're going to be an amazing nurse" Meh, I'll just be happy if I survive this semester if I'm being honest. ?
Thank you so much! Believe it or not, a simple thing like this shows what kind of person you are, so yes, you will be a great nurse, im sure of it! ?

Thank you so much for the information and what your opinions are since they really do matter to me! I love getting feedback and what others would do in my situation. I totally agree with you! If I get accepted somewhere closer to home, I will definitely take that option. However, if this is my only acceptance (lets hope I get accepted somewhere ?) then I would definitely ride it out for 2 years! Rather than pay for WCU ? ...
Again! Thank you soooooo much! You and @Kenji12345 are so awesome and helpful in your responses. Wish I was in your cohorts ?

I got in with 82 and I know others who were accepted with 79 as part of the "initial group." Alternates were taken in at 74 as much as 2-3 months after acceptance was sent out. They may have been lower acceptance for alternates, but I'm not sure.
