Golden West College ADN Fall 2022

Nursing Students School Programs

Updated:   Published

Hello everyone,

I am creating this forum so other pre-nursing students can gather and share helpful information regarding the application process, specifically for GWC's Fall 2022 entry. Some information I received by (staff removed name) (GWC counselor) today is that GWC's nursing program will accept the highest science grade regardless of repeats/remediation. I was worried because I took Anatomy, Physiology, and Microbiology all the way back in 2012-2013 when I was first starting college, and I failed a few times ? thankfully, previous failing grades will not impact your eligibility in receiving the highest points in the multi-criteria (just get those A's ?).

Additionally, she informed me that if science grades are older than the recency requirement (e.g. GWC has a 7 year recency), then schools will not consider these past grades (even if you failed, like in my case) in the application process.

This was a HUGE sigh of relief and hopefully it eases anyone else who might be in a similar situation.

p.s. (staff removed name) was referred to me by one of GWC's nursing professors. She did inform me that in the past, GWC used to average the science grades, but this is currently NOT the case (hopefully they don't change anything in the upcoming months).

Best of luck to anyone applying this cycle! ?

Hi everyone! I am applying to GWC as well.

Hi everyone,

I am hoping that someone could provide insight into my situation… I am currently getting really to apply but noticed that one of the prerequisites is to take COMM 110 - Public Speaking, but I have only taken COMM 100 - Interpersonal Communication. For some reason, I was under the impression that these were equivalent courses but now it look like they are not. I currently hold a BS from CSULB and have taken all other prerequisites/requirements. Is anyone familiar with the application process and able to confirm that COMM 100 will count as a prerequisite? I took this class over 5 years ago, and am feeling pretty disheartened that I might not even be able to apply because I took COMM 100 instead of COMM 110. Thank you in advance.

Unfortunately, it would not count. It would specifically have to be “COMM G110” at Golden West College [OR] “COMM 130” at CSULB.

Interpersonal communication is a different class than Public speaking, albeit, similar in the name.

Specializes in nursing.

I need recommendations for a CNA program that is accredited.  I am applying to GWC with 79 points, and I got a denial from Saddleback.  Head of Saddleback department said to be careful what CNA program you take because of accrediation.

@nursee101 I would talk to a counselor if I were you. If the school does not consider it, take the class as soon as possible so you still get to apply for Spring.

Hello! @stephdecosta I have been looking around as well. Would you mind posting if you find one? That is my backup plan in case I do not get in this cycle. Thank you! And good luck to us!

I took my CNA certificate at Allegiance Career Insititute at Orange. It was a 10-week program.

@LiamB Thank you! I will check them out.

Hi! I just submitted my application with 80 points. The cutoff has been higher than that depending on the cohort in some previous semesters, so fingers crossed. Good luck to everyone applying this semester!

Also, a separate question,

does any one know if the critical thinking course (G110) might be covered if you have  bachelors already? The equivalency course they provided only provided equivalents for other community colleges but the bachelors I have is from UC Irvine. Thanks in advance ?

English G110 will be waived if you have a bachelors, so you don’t need to take it for the ADN program.
However you do not get the two points towards your total for the purposes of admission.

Hello everyone,

I'm Kenji and a first semester student at GWC Nursing program. If you have questions, feel free to post here or DM me. I'll try to answer a few things that I already see on this thread:

1) CNA: if you are worried about which program is acredited, always check the state government website and it will tell you which ones are (Like the BRN is for Nurses): https://www.cdph.ca.gov/Programs/CHCQ/LCP/Pages/Certified-Nurse-Assistant-Training-Programs.aspx

2) @nursee101: I would strongly recommend reaching out to the GWC counseling office and speaking to the pre-nursing specialist, her name starts with N (I can't post full names due Allnurses policy, but go to this website: https://www.goldenwestcollege.edu/nsr/videos/index.html scroll down until you see nursing - 3rd one - and the counselor's name is right there ). I think you are OK since you have a Bachelor's but you might need to do a waiver process which she can help you do. Send her an email ASAP, she is amazing and bends over backwards for students (I would not have gotten in without her help).

3) TEAS: Looks like policy changed a bit for this Fall. You can only retake the TEAS if you get 62% or less and you have to wait 365 days. I do know the new TEAS is coming out in June, so they might make an exception and allow you to take that regardless of when you took TEAS 6 but wait for official word on that or reach out to the nursing counselor for more up to date info.

Hope that helps, and again, please post here if you have more questions, I will help as best as I can.

Good luck everyone,

Kenji

@Kenji12345 Thank you so much for your help! It looks like you were accepted for the Spring cohort, I was wondering how many points were you accepted with? If you know also, the average points of your cohort?
