Getting in a New York Hospital

Published

I feel I am working hard, not smart, at finding a hospital job in NYC. I only have my associate degree which I know a big problem with the current trend to only hire those with BSN.

Unfortunately, I did not schmooze, network, like I should have while I was working my clinical school rotation so I do not have great contacts. What is the best way to go about finding a position, getting attention, breaking in, etc?

Some say hunt down the Nurse Manager and set up an appt with her but I always get redirected to HR.

Thanks!

The US employment process is very complex - with a ton of Federal, state & sometimes even local regulations that must be followed. The best way to ensure compliance with all this 'stuff' is for HR to manage the process. Managers can be terminated if they do not follow these rules because this increases the organization's liability exposure. Therefore, it is usually a complete waste of time to try to gain an advantage by approaching the hiring manager. As you have discovered, they will only point you toward HR.

You can try emailing the NM or HR (use google to find it). They are more likely to be welcoming than if you approach them face to face and they do no know you or have not heard of you. You can go to the NM if you have a connection to him/her, for example you did a clinical or preceptorship there and he/she remembers you (or if not another nurse on the unit can put in a good word). Otherwise, just try emailing them.
