A MBA has been very helpful to my risk management career and was a key factor in getting me to the Director and VP level in large healthcare and corporate settings. I got my MBA while still working at the malpractice insurance company. I chose the MBA over the MHA, since the MBA is applicable to more than just the healthcare sector, while a MHA can pigeon-hole you only in healthcare. Some sort of management degree is generally a prerequisite for moving up the management ladder. The higher up you go on the ladder, the more important is general business, administrative and financial knowledge. I have met nurses and other provider types with MBA degrees in both healthcare and business management positions.
Several of my organization's Chief Nursing Officers have MSN/MBA credentials. The problem with plain MBA programs is that healthcare finance is 'different', so those generic degrees aren't so useful without industry experience. It's a very attractive combo in today's increasingly complex healthcare environment.
I am also considering my MSN/MBA. My currently a critical care RN, but my long term goals include administration and I think it would be a good option. It's always great to hear others professional experiences. I was accepted to FNP school, but realized my heart was more in the administration/business side of healthcare.
Does anyone have advice about how to transition from a clinical role to administration while working on a MSN/MBA degree? Thanks in advance.

Hi all!
I wasn't too sure where to put this, so apologies if it's in the wrong place.
Just wanted some advice on furthering my education. Has anyone gotten an MSN/MBA dual degree?/Has anyone gotten an MBA? How has getting those degrees furthered your nursing career/career in general?
NP route isn't for me. But I do want an advanced degree. My thought process is getting a dual degree allows me to still be marketable at a higher level in nursing, but the MBA allows me to branch out into other fields if I find that I need a break from nursing or something of that nature.
Thoughts? Advice?
Thanks in advance for all the guidance!
