Getting an interview. This is harder than i thought..

Published

Hi all. Graduated in May with FNP, passed boards and got state license, yada yada. So now I've started the process of applying online. I've applied to several types of jobs; retail clinic, hospital clinic, preop, specialty practice, independent Primary care. So far I've heard zip. How many applications did you get out for your first NP job before you were granted an interview? I'm in the Boston area (and looking beyond city limits) and did not expect to have such trouble!!

I am a FNP and it is taking most of my class up to one year to secure a job. If you live in an area that is highly saturated with APNs, then you are in trouble. Most of my interviews came from word of mouth and the positions were not even posted. I did manage to get a per diem hospice position with the option to become FT once the palliative care program gets started. So we will see where that goes. I also got that position because a good colleague of mine happen to place my CV in the hiring managers hand. Currently I am teaching at a local school of nursing and I hate it. I just have to grin and bear it. It is such a shame.

Try Rosetta stone sis. You are gonna need it in that area. Too many ppl that only speak spanish in Florida.

You should be able to use your contacts from school to get an interview at least. Have they helped you?

Retail clinics and home care are hiring like crazy too.

I think it's going to get better for us soon with the ACA coming in full blast unless something messes that up. I am looking into purchasing the Rosetta Stone from Amazon or either taking Spanish classes at the local community college. Something has got to give for us.

It will. Just get as much experience as you can with the palliative care gig. And your right. The ACA thing is gonna be huge! Its so many changes with insurance its not even funny

I can't keep up with that thing but I see some of the "younger generation" MDs and DOs are excited to be teaming up with us especially the ones in primary care. The interviews have been rolling in for me but I just can't get this inexperience and lack of Spanish monkey off my back. I'm working on it though. At least I have medical Spanish.

You will see soon enough what I mean. And at least the intetviews are rolling in. You can make yourself more marketable by offering to do a working interview too. This way they can see you in action before that just say no.

Update: I have an interview with a community health center doing Peds. It's a HRSA facility so keep your fingers crossed for me!

Have you thought about moving?

Update; I have two interviews this week! Both in hospitals which is what I wanted.
