not getting hired

Published

i am new to traveling, in fact i am trying to get my first assignment. i have 23+ years of icu experience at the same facility. i have not been able to get a job. i want to go to north carolina and have been submitted for 10 jobs. so far, no one has even called me. my application should look good, i have very good references.

i believe i am w/ a good company, trinity healthcare staffing. i am w/ a couple other companies but one has no jobs in nc and the other has the same openings.

my recruiter thinks this may be due to me being a first time traveler and the fact that i come from a small facility and the hospitals we have submitted to are larger. i was also wondering if the fact that i have had the same job for 23 years might be a contributing factor. (thus set in my ways)

i am getting pretty nervous about me being unemployed. how long after submission should i expect a phone call? what can i do, if anything to get a job? any suggestions or words of encouragement? i was told i made the 'short list' at one of the facilities but still no phone call.

i live in kansas and have the option of applying for jobs here, but that is not the point, i want out. nc is the only other license i have so far.

help!!!!

I'm traveling for the first time and I received an interview and offer in NC. Hospital is a community hospital. Pay isn't the greatest. Both of the companies I'm working with has openings in NC. Sometimes it can be the recruiter other times the company itself. Which companies are you working with? If you want my companies names and recruiters name let me know. Pay isn't the greatest in the hospitals I'm considering. Are you looking at certain areas in NC or are you open to any area? Good luck and let me know how you make out.

did you get that murphy icu position. icu is what i want. i was a couple days too late for that one. all the other available icu jobs in nc are at larger facilities so that may be part of my problem coming from a smaller community hospital.

i'm w/ trinity and onassignment, both reputable companies and i like my recruiters. one of them told me today that nc is notorious for a slow response, don't know how true that is. he also had a good point, that if they can hold out another couple weeks they will have you over christmas. he said he has noticed a big slow down in hiring across the board right now. that was my plan, to start around the 15th so that i could be home for christmas. oh well.

good luck in your traveling adventures. i hope you enjoy it. by the way, what companies are you with?

Have you tried Millenia Medical Staffing. They are based in Charleston, I think. I stopped traveling for a while; so, never used them. I found the recruiter (Kent) to try hard and be dedicated, with plenty of personal contacts in the Carolinas. They also have a great reputation on other travel nurse forums.

i have been a travel nurse for 10 years now. there are alot of travel companies out there. if they really want your business they will find you a job. talk to another company. i dont think your recruiter is being 100% honest with you. dealing with recruiters is almost like dealing with used car salesman. from my experience i have found if one company cant help me the other can.

Hi KSMoral...yep I have had the same issue before and while your suspicions are right, I have to say you need to be signed up with about four MAJOR companies that have been around a while and NC is a tough state to get work in has been my experience. Most companies will reimburse for licensure so don't buy it first unless it's Ca, Tx or Fla where's there's tons of work and you do not need reimbursement. I believe age is a factor as well. Don't give up! Begin somewhere where there's lots of work and go with a company that you know is reputable.

Gumspit,

I noticed you are from Bama I am also MOBILE.... Finding a assignment close to home or with decent pay in the south is a joke!!! I was offered my first assignment today in Wyoming 32.00 an hour and you pay your own utilities and have to get them turned on is that customary???? Email me directly if you have any advice for me.... ROLL TIDE ROLL!!

No thats not customary. Every travel company i know pays the utilities and has them turned on. Please know there are alot of companies out there. Do your home work and make them give you what you want.

I stopped traveling last year......found a job that pays as much as the top travel jobs. Although I miss the travel, my main reason was monitary....unlike you I had the opposite situation older grad career change with only 1 yr nursing experience and student loans, but I was still bombarded with jobs openings.

I totally agree with Runman1914. Travel agencies are like dealing with used car salesmen. I don't think your being a nurse for over 20 yrs at one facility has anything to do with it. I've know plenty of nurses who started traveling after their children were grown.

However, when I travelled.... I never put all my eggs in one basket. Post your resume on careerbuilder or monster.com ...and if you really want to be contacted for jobs fill out the healthcare travelers "Career Center: Travel Nursing" on-line. I still get calls for openings from that site.

Some companies have a strong relationship with a hospital than others. I have even been known to contact the scheduling office to find out which agencies they use most.

The best advise I can give you as a new traveller is to talk to a few different agencies, read as many posting on here and on some of the other boards and make some comparisons. The more you educated yourself the less likely they are to take advantage of you. Many of the companies have the same job postiings....some are less greedy than others. Always remember there is a bill rate and you get a piece of the pie and they get a piece of the pie and the pie(bill rate) is always one size....you want the bigger piece and the best offer. Nothing is free it all comes from the bill rate. It is just distributed differently depending on who you are talking to. So when they tell you this is free and that is free, as I said nothing is free. Free is coming out of your % of the pie.
