Getting hired based on school attended?

Published

Iv'e been hearing from recent graduates that they have been haveing trouble getting hired as lvn/lpn because of the school they attended, vocational/trade school. Is this information legit? Will employers turn you down even if you have a licence because of the school you atteneded? makes me wonder to pay more to attened a more well known school, even if I have to pay more. =(

In my area, hiring managers don't give a crap where you attended school. In three years, no employer has ever asked about my school. In the working world, their only concerns are that you're a warm body with a pulse and a readiness to fulfill their staffing needs. This is the situation in my area.

The fact that I was in school pursuing a BSN played a part in me getting hired one time but it was not the only reason. The DON was glad to be getting a new future RN for the night shift and therefore hired me when she could have hired any LVN for the position. Other than that, no employer has shown any interest in my education other than to question why I never finished it. That's it. It is the license that they are interested in, not your school.

Thanks for the feedback. I assumed the employer only cared about the licence, since thats what matters.

I know here in TN it doesn't matter because the LPN in TN is only offered at the TN Technology Centers which is a vocational school.

I think it is regional as to whether something like this will be considered. In my area, nursing positions are very competitive. The person doing the hiring is only human, and if this person knows anything about the reputation of the area's schools (known in my area), I would imagine the school would play a part. Then again, if the climate is this competitive, I'd consider a different region (as I am) for my first job.
