Published

Hi all,

last week I posted something about me getting fired because of school. Now it is Official and only a matter of weeks for me to get fired or laid off.I was just wondering am I able to get Unemployment chekcs from the gov't if i get laid off or fired even though I am going to school?

I am very furious a my job and wants to quit right away, I am the Data Entry Lead clerk .MY boss asked the owner if I could work the weekend and she said that I can't since I cant be there in the Weekdays why should I work in the weekends. He even told her that she should just fired or let go of us if we can't work in the weekdays.

It's the owner that wants us fired.Yes (US)3 of us are getting fired because we are planning on going to school.I will start my program in January and would love to get unemployment checks from the gov't.My boss is the best boss I could ever have.

I hate to leave a job that pays pretty good, but I know in the end I'll find a better paying one.Hopefully the owner suffer since he's going to fire 3 of us.

WILL I"LL BE ABLE TO GET A CHECK FROM UNEMPLOYMENT?EVEN THOUGH IM GOING TO SCHOOL?PLS HELP!!

I am so sorry about your situation. I don't see why you wouldn't get unemployment. Call the office and find out. Good luck to you.

If you are laid off, then yes you can usually collect unemployment.

However if you are fired with cause, usually you cannot. Check out NOLO's website for some general information: http://www.nolo.com/article.cfm/objectID/816E659D-BA7A-4527-8867F6CCED3C61FD/104/150/146/ART/

You should also check with your state's Unemployment Compensation department.

Good luck.

Well if they fired me, my boss told me that the only reason I would get fired is because I wouldn't be able to work in the morning since ima be at school. But the owner is such a bad person that he wants me fired.instead of working in the weekends or even at night.

DANG WHAT A BUNCH OF HATERS!!! I hate employers like that. I was offered a better position with better pay by the scheduling manager and account manager. I was well liked by upper management and when my supervisor found out he got a little jealous because he wanted the spot light. So then supervisor was going behind my and telling them a whole bunch of junk about it not being a good idea and how it would be better if they found a person that wanted to make it a "career". And how I was going to school. That supervisor gave me hell from the first time that I mentioned school until the day I left. Everytime he would talk to me he would mention something about me going to school even though it never effected my work or when they wanted me to work overtime. He really didnt even want to work there himself and wasnt planning on staying either. After that I didnt really care about the job. I can see having a life long career as a SECURITY GUARD.

So forget about the owner. There will be other opportunities in life. They just want to look after the best interest of their company. With you only wanting to work weekends and not the busy days during the week doesnt benefit the company. A lot of the time employers do not want to see you better yourself or leave.

Yes,

I believe so thanks for the reply.I have been working there for 2 years and me and my boss became very close, now that we are getting fired cuz there's 3 of us.SOme of us would like to resign as well.Anyhow After I am done with my program I believe I'll be a good worker and would definitely earn more.

Hi Griddleboy,

What state are you in? I live in California and was laid-off from my airline job in 2003..On the unemployment form I had to fill out, there was a question asking if I was in school. I marked yes, and was promptly denied unemployment benefits. Basically, there opinion was that if I was in school than it would take time away from looking for another job. It took about 3 months and an appeal in front of a judge to get their decision reversed. I would check out your states unemployment website to see how going to school might effect your benefit eligibility.

Good luck,

A.

Hi Aviatrix I am also from California.I am probably going to put yes on that question also,How come it took so long to reversed their decision?Hopefully I could find a job though.I will be getting fired probably in about 2-3 weeks.

Thanks

It took about three months going back and forth doing these stupid phone interviews with the unemployment people and than getting an appointment

scheduled with the judge. I basically had to prove that I was already going to school prior to my layoff..and that it would not effect my job search.

When they overturned the decision I did get back pay for the three months.

Sorry to hear about your situation..hope everything works out!:)

I was talking about quitting or getting fired with one of my coworkers the other day. He said that his brother is an unemployed student collecting unemployment compensation. He further stated that, while most people on unemployment are required to provide proof that they are actively seeking a new job, students are allowed to collect their checks without trying to get a job.

This is in WI, so things may be different by you.

Good luck!!

I had 2 or 3 girls in my class who were collecting unemployment but I dont think they told the unemployment office they were in school bc I think u dont qualify then. one was a CNA in a nursing home and they fired her for being late for work when they knew she came straight from school! School didnt let out until 2:45 (sometimes 2:30) and she had to be there at 3. They wouldnt support her there, I think that is so messed up that they would try to discourage her from going to school like that. You would think they would do everything they could to help as in working with her schedule, etc. She said they said that if they made an exception for her they would have to do it for everyone! But they wouldnt even let her change her schedule to part time, etc.

I was jealous bc they were making more on unemployment than I was working! lol :)

Employers and bosses like what has been described in these posts don't care anything about the employees. They just want the job, shifts, nights, weekends, whatever covered so THEY don't have to cover it themselves.

They will bully someone else into doing it, is my opinion.

My advice is to get out from under such a bully, but find something else to get some kind of paycheck and do what you can to stay in school.

My job supports people who go to school. I work for the state, and we have young people there who are in college all the time. So there ARE jobs out there that will support you.
