Getting into ASN program

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello,

So I am already a college graduate with a BA in psych. Unfortunately it wasn't until my last semester that I really figured out what I want to do, and that's nursing. So Im going to begin my last required prerequisite this spring, then I plan on taking the TEAS exam for Ivy Tech's ASN program at the end of my spring semester. I know it is a competitive program so I'm a little worried I won't get in. Having already failed my first attempt at A&P (assuming it wasn't going to be as much work as it turned out to be), Ive been focusing the last few months on doing everything I can to try to learn as much as I can for the course before taking it, and I'm definitely beginning to understand and learn the subject. So im hoping that with enough effort Ill manage to get an A or B. I already completed the other 2 program pre-reqs with A's in both.

So anyway,

1) if I happen to slip up again and end up with a C in A&P but still manage to do well on the TEAS, is it still likely I'll be accepted?

2)How far ahead should I start studying for the exam in order to do well? Is 3 months enough time?

3)What exactly is considered a good score? Like the kind of score that almost guarantees acceptance into Ivy Tech's ASN program?

4) And lastly, if Im planning on taking the exam in 3 1/2 months, how soon should I begin making all of the arrangements/getting TB test/attending info session?

I know these are questions I should be discussing with my advisor, but she can be a bit difficult to get ahold of sometimes. So I'd greatly appreciate any information!

Thanks!

Hi, to be short:

1. Many schools accept pre-reqs with grades C or better. However, the higher your grade, the better, of course. As far as the TEAS scores, again, each school makes its own cut off scores: some may require you to score at least 60% on each subsection while other school may require that you score at least 80% on each subsection. This is the question you would definitely want to ask a person in the admissions office.

2. In terms of when you should start to study for the exam, my advice is start ASAP; however, you mentioned you are/will be taking A7P again, so I feel like you will benefit more from taking the exam after you have completed this course, or at least half way through it.

3. Again, only the person in the admissions office can tell you what scores they look for to select potential candidates.

4. In terms of TB test and other health arrangements; I think you do so once you are accepted into the program. The schools usually do their in-house health assessments and provide info sessions/orientation for selected applicants.

I hope it helps!

Your acceptance into Ivy Tech depends on how many total points you have vs points of other students applying to the nursing program. The points come from your prerequisite grades and your TEAS exam. Yes, you could get accepted with a C but make sure to have a really high TEAS to make up for the points. People are offered acceptances into the program based on who scores the highest amount of points. I would suggest you look at their information pdf on their website for more information.
