George Washington ABSN Fall 2017

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi everyone,

I just submitted a Fall 2017 application for the ABSN program at George Washington University. I thought I'd start a thread so we can share some experiences, pieces of advice, and whatnot.

Hi, I'm currently a student in the GW ABSN. Happy to answer any questions! I looked on here a ton before I started, so I know how many questions you all probably have.

Hi Addison. I don't know how closely linked the vbsn and absn are linked but could you shoot me an email? I have soooo many questions thanks!!! [email protected]

The VBSN and ABSN programs have different names during applications to accommodate students of different backgrounds. But once you get into the program, it is one and the same. Applicants from both programs are mixed into the same cohort and take the same classes together.

VBSN actually have separate lab sessions and are all on the same class schedule together. We are put into pods for classes and VBSN are all required to be together in certain pods. They have their own labs but are in classes with the ABSN students. I believe they are in clinical together too, but not 100% sure about that.

So what about your schedule the first semester. Could you give me a breakdown of times? I know mine won't be the same but I am trying to get an idea of the type of childcare I will need

First semester is pretty much: Monday 10-4pm, Tuesday 8am-12:30, Wednesday 12-3pm, Thursday Labs 10-5pm, Friday Clinical 6:30am-3:30pm. One pod has labs after classes on Tuesday and Wednesday so they have longer days but are free on Thursdays. Some people have Friday free and clinical on Saturday, but you don't get to choose so there is no way to plan for that. You just have to be free everyday except Sunday.

I don't know if it will be the same for fall semester, but it will be a lot no matter what. I would for sure live as close to campus as you can. The traffic here in insane and people who commute are spending 1-2+ hours in the car each way depending on the time of day and weather. I find it hard to get to the grocery store some weeks so I can't imagine having to commute too. The program is very very intense. You have tons of work to do outside of class on top of studying. I wouldn't plan on having much else going on.

Thanks so much! I already live in md but plan on moving closer to campus. Do you have any info on w2?

I'm not in W2. I don't want to live here after the program and I'm looking to go into peds, which they don't offer. I did interview for it though just to check it out, and I found that it just wasn't a good fit for me. The students who are in it do all of their clinicals at MedStar which is a bit of a commute from Ashburn. The rest of us get a variety of hospitals for our clinicals which i like. If you are planning on staying in this area and want that secured first job it might be right for you. I would for sure go check it out and research the hospital first though. Just depends on you and your plans. I've heard mixed reviews on clinical experiences there.

Where do the online courses come to play in the whole scheme of things? You are awesome!

You don't take any online first semester. For summer, we are taking one on campus class, one online and then for the third course we have a choice of either online or on campus... and we also have clinical rotations. Then we take one online in the fall and two more our last semester, I think... we don't have too much info on all that yet. Also, keep in mind the schedules are all a little different depending on when you start. I think they are re-organizing things too now that there is a summer cohort as well.

Hello everyone!

I look forward to meeting you all in a few short months! I am looking for a roommate, so if you are interested please let me know!
