I'm not sure about specialty anymore but after talking to nurses and reading on here, I just don't want to be a jaded nurse.

Having no clinical experience yet as I start the actual nursing program in August, I think that I want to work in cardiology. My son was born with coarc of his aorta and a bicuspid aortic valve. Thank God he is fine now, but it really sparked my interest in the heart. In A&P, when it came time to study the heart, I learned everything I could. I will never forget how helpless I felt when my son was first diagnosed, nor will I forget the support that his Dr and nurses offered me. I would like to return what they did for me to others. Yes, cardiology is where I want to be....Jennifer...

Jennifer,
I have the same desire as you. I eventually want to work with pediatric cardiology patients. Possibly in picu. My 12 y/o son was also born with a congenital heart defect and actually just had open heart surgery last summer. He had some pretty tough complications, but is fine now. I have always admired the medical staff throughout his life that have been such a great source of information and comfort. That is why I went back to school to become a nurse. Last summer when my son had surgery, he was flown back to the hospital where he had the surgery after 2 weeks post op. The nurses that took care of him in this emergent situation, were awesome!! I admire all nurses and am even more proud to be part of this honorable profession. Good Luck to you

Open to experience from clinicals when I start them, but as of now...I think I would like
1) Labor and Delivery or mother/baby/postpartum
2)Physician's office Nurse
3)clinic or some type of social service setting
4) some sort of nurse educator or elementary school nurse
Almost everyone says to start out in med/surg..but I don't really know what that is yet. Not to try and sound dumb but that doesn't come 'til next summer for me. Anyone know what it entails?

Since I will just be finishing my prereqs this year, this is definately subject to change. At this point I am most interested in surgery or hospice. :)

LOL,:chuckle Yeeaah I hear that one.
I want to go to med/surg. right out of school. Stay there for awhile. I nver know, I might really like it there and end up staying. There are alot of things I am considering after I have had more experience as a nurse: L&D, PICU, NICU, ICU, ER, Hospice. I am keeping my options wide open as you can see.:)

i'm headed righ toward oncology. no doubts. my grandmother died of lung cancer when i was young-and we were inseparable, she was in fact my best friend and i still can't talk about her without getting teary.
i then worked on a cancer floor for 8 years...just a little more direction from above on where to go...the patients and families were amazing, too many stories to share but the patients gave me a sense of purpose and fufillment.

As of right now I have a couple ideas of what I want to go into, although, I have also heard that it's best to keep an open mind during nursing school, which I will begin in the fall. But as of now, I really feel a pull towards geriatrics, especially working with Alzheimers patients. I am also interested in psych, and Hospice as well. Maybe somehow they can be combined? Most of all, I want to be a graduate nurse! :) Best of luck to everyone. Louisepug

Psych nursing!!! I knew I'd love it before I ever started school, and I can't wait to graduate so I can jump in!! I think that the mentally ill are often ignored by society in general, and I'd love to be able to help stabilize someone to the point that they may be able to lead a productive, happy life. I am also simply fascinated by anything related to psychology, and I'd like to use my first degree sometime! I got a BA in English with a psych minor back in 1999, but haven't used it at all...now I can! LOL
My only dilemma now is whether to work med/surg for awhile before going to psych...Plenty of time to decide!
